I think until we have manned explorers and spaceships to go, it would be better tho send robots. They are far more reliable. Robots don't develop mental illness like people or animals. Finally they can be built to be more flexible or mission specific  as needed.

But for Mars there is , if i remember correctly , nearly 20 years before a manned exploration .
Robots would be clearly more intelligent(!) until that . But with humans it sounds so better
