I have dutifully book marked the planet maps ..... (how do we use them?)     (We need a dorky icon for me to use ....)

I haven't tried it, but there might be a way of converting these jpegs into heightfield maps.   Possibly via a tool on the Internet, you might need to find two consecutive conversion tools to do this.

Also they may have to be used for long distance.

a noob question...how do I use these???.....

not sure if it is possible, but maybe using an image map shader attached to a displacement shader??
gonna have a go myself and see what happens!

Earth's resolutions are a lot lower than at the site I've been linking here a few posts ago, but this site also has nice planet maps of the other planets from our solar system
