Well I've been working on this for a little while and its not quite turning out they way I want. I did put dandelO's planetary grass shader on it but the extreme displacement makes it look very strange, in my next render I will probably remove most of the distortion or find some other ways of making the island "greener" as the trees look very out of place on that rock. Maybe I'll use some bushes or grass populations.

I think you're too far away for grass pops to show to advantage. I'd suggest that you just put a plain grass shader in, but limit it by slope, with a dirt shader underneath (elegac posted a nice simple grass + soil shader with one of his images, which I adapted and used in this image: http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=6848.msg74310#msg74310).

Great clouds, by the way.

I actually really like the varied nature of the terrain! :)

Yes you're are definitely right about the populations of grass, the camera is way too far away for any populations to be useful. Do you happen to have the link to those grass shaders?I searched around in the file sharing forums but couldn't find them. thanks for the advice.

Hi Gforce, I PMed you about this.

Henry Blewer

I use the same color as the grass in the distance. That way the render time is not affected by a displacement shader. It does depend on the look you want.

Yes this would be helpful since my pov is pretty wide. I could just blend the displacement shader of the power fractal of the displacement for the "grass" right?

I will sometimes use a different grass shader. This has a distance shader added into the Blend by input. I use the main color to be as close to the foreground grass color as possible. Then I add a small scale power fractal with the secondary color (Walli's grasses use an image map, one of the shades is a olive green/brownish color).
