Here is a render I worked on. I also, made a tutorial on how to create Depth of Field which is posted in the File sharing section.

Very nice render, the DOF looks good :)

This is a beautiful render, but I have to disagree, that the DOF looks good (I hope you don't mind - this is meant as constructive critisism!):
The DOF in this image makes it look like a small model. Either the closest (to the camera) plants of the picture should be blurred, or should be the only area that's NOT blurred, depending where the focus is.

Here...
http://images.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://www.photips.com/images/examples/depth-of-field/depth-of-field-shallow-bee.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.photips.com/depth-of-field&usg=__EHtcuht2EcZFTbdDdR8dQDhVo3g=&h=375&w=500&sz=46&hl=de&start=123&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=1ApKWHp0ZI6BqM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522depth%252Bof%252Bfield%2522%26start%3D108%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dde%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:de:official%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1

...you can see some nice examples of DOF (the ones with the bees). The blurring has a similar amount like the blur on your image, but you can see that these are macro-photographs.
When you type "forest" in Google image search, you'll maybe find some images with a very subtle, almost unnoticable DOF in the distance, or DOF with some objects directly in front of the camera.

What do you think? I don't want to be a know-it-all, but I have seen so many images where (artificial) DOF wasn't used correctly, which made the whole thing look ridiculously small.
I'd love to see another version!

Hannes

By the way, I just found your tutorial! Fantastic, thank you! The only thing I would change is the distance.

Tangled-Universe

I didn't say the DOF looks correct, I said it looks good ;)
Yes Hannes, I think you're definitely correct, but to they eye it looks quite nice.
With native DOF in TG2 with lens-parameters like in real life you should be able to generate quite accurate results. Depending on your working scales of course.

Thanks for the tips.
@Hannes: Yes, real world stuff is fantastic. Also, a few of the members here have done some convincing DOF work but, only a few. As far as the tutorial goes I think I mentioned playing around withe the near and far numbers to the users liking. I would like to see what folks come up with. I certainly will take your advice and change some values to make it better than "it looks good". :-)

@Tangled-Universe: You speak of native DOF in TG2. I was unaware it existed unless your speaking of an upcoming release.

Thanks again.

MGebhard the alpha testers have been using a build of Terragen with native DOF for a while. Some of them have posted images and it looks really nice. In fact Frank posted one not that long age, i'll try and find the link.

I believe that the DOF was being developed and used by the alpha testers even before the last release but there were some problems with it that prevented it from being included.

Edit: Here is Franks image that uses native TG DOF, there have been others posted as well.

There has been a version with native DOF in TG2. I don't know if or when it will be released, it's not working flawlessly at the moment.
I merely meant to say that native DOF, when using real world scales, would "always" give you correct DOF's.

Zairyn Arsyn

to me the DOF makes it look a bit unreal
