Hello, I'm new to the forum. actually, I'm really new to Terragen as well.  It was recommended by a friend, and I've had some fun going through neuspadrins tuts, and making a benmcduff mountain, but i could use a little more help.  im trying to make a landmass for a group of countries in a world I'm making. I haven't decided yet whether or not it will be pen and paper, or just a story, but I wanted to create the land using Terragen.  I guess, to start I was wondering how to control the terrain power fractals.  I want to have more of a molded approach than to have most of it done by random seeds.  for example, when i opened a new project, and created a power fractal in the terrain tab, I used a paint shader.  it made a canyon, but i couldn't figure out how to make it a range..  another problem was that when I made a lake object it covered the world.  Is there a way to create a body of water within a set area? i tried a paint shader there as well, and it didn't turn out so well.

lastly, can I find an index for the terminology?  I know what a fractal is, but the rest is guesswork.  thanks for any help!

The planet object which all the terrains we build using Terragen 2 is Earth sized. So to make your continents, the scales need to the right size. I am not sure how many meters the Earth is round. But about 1/3 of this would work for the lead in scale. The scale size about 1/4 of the lead in scale. I would leave the smallest scale at about 100 meters to start.
Now it's a matter of adding smaller values to 'fill' out the world. You could try NVSEAL's Planet pack from NWDA. I have not tried it out, but it looks like it would allow you to build your world very nicely.
