Thanks to DandelO for his voronoi crack clips.  They really helped me understand the function nodes a bit better.  I'm trying to get back into TG2 because I got my hands on a new 6 core CPU(real time saver 8))
...Just beginning to understand the uses and potential exploits of TG2's node system, it's awesome! :o
I've got some problems with this image, particularly some parts of the noisy displacement but I'm arfraid to change it because I like the way it looks with the larger mountains.  I'm trying to work on a second version at a different angle with some planets in the backdrop.

That looks really cool! The rough displacement works quite well, though the sense of scale is admittedly odd. It's an interesting style though. Reminds me of a more realistic Spore.

Esgalachoir

Thanks!  Yeah, I kind of flung the laws of scale out the door for this one...maybe in another project I'll get a little more down to earth  ;) ::)

I thought the same! It looks really nice  :)

sometimes its good to let go of the sense of scale, it can make things more interesting..  :)
awesome you got a six core cpu.. great for rendering!  :)

Thanks guys.  Yeah, you can't be to inhibited :P...and yes, that 6-core is a rendering beast :o  It significantly speeds up the creative process.  I'm rendering a second picture with this planet, along with two others and some asteroids.  Doing the second image at .8 detail, 3600x1710 resolution, supersample prepass, and 6 anti-aliasing.  It's been rendering for 15 hours and it's more than halfway done.  I'll post it when I can.

Esgalachoir

Final Version.  I've got some very minor gripes, but I'm overall fairly happy with the final result.

I like the variation in color. Nice image

Really nice surfacing. I think it would look better without the smaller planet in the background, but the foreground really shines.

dandelO

Nice, the new one is great, I like the shadows of the rims.

I knew someone would do better than my crack shader test.tgd images...

Quite similar scenes, I think. Except for the distances, of course. :)

Esgalachoir

Thanks everyone!  domdib, the little planet was actually one of my gripes, but it didn't cross my mind to just get rid of it.  Maybe I'll try a render without it when I can.  Either that or make it less noisy looking, but I like the idea of tossing it.
DandelO, those are nice...I'm trying to figure out how I didn't come across them while combing the forum...thanks again for the 'crack' ::)
