Hello, here is my first project (i'm new terragen child ;D), it's unfinished yet, but this what i've got now 8) ;D ;) Don't judge me too hard ;) My next steps will be, vegetation variation, some rocks in water, arc, clouds...
Special thanks to Dune and other guys, i learnt so much from them ;) 8)
P.S. Teaser - my second project i'm working parallel is cliffs... it's just a begining ;))
-Best regards, Artice
Excellent work - how did you get those lovely sharp edges?
At first or second project ? ;)
Looks great.
The rock strata, fracturing and pit marks look fantastic. The colors are nicely oxidized and is very believable all throughout.
THANKS GUYS!!! I'll do better camera position when will finish to capture more details.. it's just a preview of my progress :) ;)
Great rocks structure !
Thanks Antoine ;)
Good work, iwnbts.
@Mick: try a sphere and some strata ;)
Thanks Dune ;)
Absolutely great structures! well done! :)
DocCharly65 thanks a lot ;)
The second looks very good.
The second is just an experiment, i want more strata look and hardness, when i finish first project i will think about new methods of terrain creation :)

Don't judge me too hard
Man, this is one hell of a start! The rock structures look amazing!
Hannes, i hope this will be one hell of a finish! ;D ;) Thanks a lot! ::)
Dune, cannot get strata to work with a sphere! :(
Why not, of course it works! Here's a simple file (old version of TG).
But why sphere ?? ::) ;D
Cube, sphere, baby planet, whatever displacable. Perhaps a pop of rocks even works. What did you use?
I used planets in most cases ;) ::)
My cooperation of terragen, worldmachine and 3d programs, post more after will finish ;) :D :o
I like it :)
Thanks :) i appreciate ;)
great image!
archonforest , thanks a lot, i do my best !! ;) ::)
That is one wild scene! Great surface work and quite an immersive environment, with a sense of large scale and light. Is this part of a larger story?
I was hoping it would be, but not.. I haven't enough PC power for this.. I wanted to create an animation, but :(( just an images for portfolio.. The most amazing thing, that i will do the series of images with this characters at different environment and someday i will do a movie stuff :o ;D :D ;)
Funny - last night I watched "War of the Worlds" and today I see this... Very cool :)
Thanks, it's somehow reminds you a War of Worlds ?! :D ;D :o :o

@Mick: try a sphere and some strata ;)
Been trying this for ages and am drawing a blank...could you post a .tgc...I seem to have a brain cramp....found the .tgd, thanks Ulco...I'm more confused than ever now having explored. Will try again on a fresh brain in the morning.
bobbystahr, What you need exactly, sphere strata or what??!! Dune posted here the file of strata example ;) ;D
Well done, great work :D
Thanks Dragonfire ;)
Hello! My research in new workflow terragen + Clarisse... I'm really amazed of what Clarisse can do itself and in cooperation with other software.. My first attempt to learn is below.. Terrain (terragen) + cloud (houdini).. It's just firs step, but i'm pretty impressed what i can do.. Big enviroments with waterfalls and animation with pretty ease.. :o 8)
good stuff
yeah, great work.
very cool renders!
Thanks guys a lot, i will show you work in progress renders, to know how far we can go 8)
Hello terrainers :) ;) My current attempt to create cliff like terrain.. I'm pretty happy with results..I will try other technique to see results.. :)) P.S. stones are ugly but they are not my goal for now :))
Looks good.
Very nice indeed. So, is this based on a sphere/cube/planet again, or displacement from the main planet?
Displacement from the planet Dune !!!
Thanks, it's really good rock.
Dune you're my teacher.. First i had many artifacts, but found a way to get rid of them.. after that i experimented with structure.. it's good, but not enough good :) i will post other tests later, i found a way to get more interesting shape ;))
Great work, I like it!

way t go...keep on tweaking seems to be the best method with TG
Thanks bobbystahr, thanks guys i will ;)
Hello guys, as i promised, my new technic !! 8) ;D I'm still experementing and results are really good as for me !! ;)
These are excellent!
What is the secret of your sharp angles?
Vector displacement perhaps but from what source?
Great work!
That looks good indeed. Care to share your technique?
Hear! Hear! please share...those are stunningly sharp
I will think about to share something later, i want to explore more to know the limits of quality i can get !!! 8) :o ;D Thanks guys for your support !! ;)

Nope.. I thought about vector displacement, but for now i didn't find a good solution yet to use as i need!!!
Wonderful stuff!
Thanks guys i'll try to push the limits even more, than we will discuss all the stuff !!! ;D 8) ;)
Clever and interesting.
Hello friends.. Thanks to Paq, my new workflow with vector displacement-caves, holes.. ;) 8) ::) This is just the beginning ;D ;)

Well I'm thoroughly impressed...well done.
bobbystahr thnaks, it's just a quick test.. I'll do my best a bit later ::) ;) And give some advices to beginners
If those are made within TG it's an awesome technique. I guess you used your vector displacement for this, just noticing your other post. Great stuff, but please give us some insight in the rock formation part.
Great work :)
This technique is an order of magnitude over what I've seen created in terragen alone!
I guess this really narrows down the field for the Cliff challenge! (joke!)
I suppose you are using Houdini for the base shape and export those to VDM?
There's more to it though, since (according to Matt, because I asked him last year) VDM does not allow for closed loops/open holes and thus true arches are not possible.
Unless the base houdini mesh had an "arch" at its side or top and you rotated the whole thing in TG.
I suppose you are using Houdini for the base shape and export those to VDM?
------------------------------
Yes and no ;D I used cinema4d and houdini, but vdm i exported from houdini!!
-----------------------------
I didn't rotate shape in terragen.. i used other technique of "arch" at its side without any rotation
----------------------------
I wish terragen have an ability to create caves and holes with VDB stuff... VDB+microdisplacement = awesomeness !! ;D ;)
A long time awaited vertical strata +rectangular noise = is too an awesomness ;D ;D ;) 8)
----------------------------
Dune, i'll give you a little tips a bit later i promise!!! :o ;) ::)
So this comes into Terragen as an image map displacement, or object? OUTSTANDING!
I get what you are doing, I just was making sure I get the method to connect to Terragen.
luvsmuzik, thanks a lot ;) This is the vector displacement map droped into terragen and then enhanced further!!!
Nice thread and experiments :)
So how are the arches done?
Two planets or a plane and a planet?
Please tell us.
You can do a lot with a bunch of cubes stacked in a certain rough shape, then apply the same displacement setup to all. Vdisp will then be a little trickier, however.
Thanks Kadri!! ;) j meyer - Arches is a vector displacement 8) ;)
Dune i can't use cubes in a rough shapes, because terragen doesn't love rough edges at all :-\
I meant 'rough' as in roughly stacked. But the cubes can be made with softer edges, and they will 'catch' that displacement.
I know about your VD experiments, but with VD alone it`s impossible
as Martin (Tangled-Universe) pointed out already.
Please explain.
...
I meant 'rough' as in roughly stacked. But the cubes can be made with softer edges, and they will 'catch' that displacement.
------------------------------
I tried this stuff already with no success!! Edges need to be too soft for displacement :-\ So it looses it cubes shape.. i thought to make rectangular as possible, bit for now terragen can't handle such stuff, you know that :-\ ;) I even tell you more, my base VD shape is complete from cubes ;D ;) but it's a secret.. ;)
------------------------------
Arch-is a vector displacement, but with extra stretch from sides.. that's all ;) 8) nothing to hide.. ;D :o
------------------------------
But..... Terragen can handle textures not bad, so if developers will make a rectangular noise texture, like in vue it will be a game changer ;) 8)
I have to experiment a bit again, apparently ;) Maybe vdisp works with a stack of cubes anyway.....
I'll wait your stuff to see how far we can go 8) ;D ;)
-----------------------------------------
Dune you will do VD in Mudbox?!
Hmm so is the VDM camera projected?
I'm thinking the basic work flow is to create a rough shape in C4D (I guess any 3d modelling program would work) and import that into Houdini where you create a normal map and then do the weird magic of flattening and "loosening" the object with the normal map attached.
The VDM is then imported into Terragen and ... well that bit don't make any sense to me since I've tried using VDM's in Terragen with no success.
I don't see how the map can store information to displace laterally at a certain height.
Scratch that I have no clue lol
Are you using the PLE version of Houdini?
Great work I say again :D
The most important work i do in cinema 4d... Than i export it to Houdini and create magical VDM, not normal map, it's the other story ;) Than i import to Terragen and do terrain magic ! ;D ;)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the most helpful thread about vector displacement!! You can read and understand how to do such a things!! ::) :o ;)

Jochen, we can do this in ZB. I got a vision last night :) I'll pm you...
Dune you don't want to share with us ?!!! ;D ;D :o ::) 8) :P

I'll share when it works... if it works ;)
Ok i'm interested in your cubes workflow ;) ;D 8) ::)
Won't be cubes 8)
This is hilarious (Referring to Dune and Artice-3d Secrets)!
I suppose after the Cliff Challenge is done we will find out more. ;)
Eagerly awaiting...
Great stuff!
Hello guys! My new technics out of terragen!!! Procedural-simple,beutiful, limitless.. I will explore more and post more later!! But i'm so exited, because now i can create any posssible shape i want, i will post later to show what i mean ;))) Enjoy! :o 8) ;) :D ;D
These are great.
I wish I could figure out how you do these. Are you still using Houdini for Vector displacement maps?
Thank you for choosing to fly with Path Trace Airlines :)
It's not Houdini, it's not terragen.. It's a magic !! (jokeing) it's not a vector map.. it's a fuly procedural geometry, wich give me all control that i need - caves, tunnels, arcs and other difficult formations.. I wiil show later pretty amazing stuff!!!
P.S. to Matt ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :-X

Oh well I shall look forward to more mind boggling examples of your creativity :)
Thanks cyphyr!!! No it's not terragen!! But when i have some time i will show some technics in teragen i used before!!! ;D ;)
Looks terrific!! Can't wait to see, how you did it!
Hello guys!! Some of new experiments!! Trying to get as much details as possible!! ;D ;)
Fantastic formations and textures! I can appreciate that you might not want to share the techniques, but I'm definitely curious as to what apps you are using?

Thanks man!!! I'm not a devil 8), of course i will tell you a secret, or i will suffer from my karma :o ;D!! Besides, i've promised to guys, that i will share something about this stuff! ;D :-X, but no one need to know it!!! :D ;) :P ::) Main rock generation - Cinema 4D, the rest (lighting, texturing, rendering) - Clarisse IFX !!!
Very pretty! This really makes me miss my copy of Cinema 4D where ever the heck it is. At this point I wonder if I just left it somewhere. I actually lost a lot of software lugging around a laptop back in the day. Including Age of Empires II <.<

Yes, bobbystahr, sadly, but terragen can't create such things, so i found solution in other softwares!! ;) 8)
supercool materials and models!

germanobanano, yep, i wanted to create it in houdini first, i even found some tutorials of rocks creation in houdini, but after i experemented in cinema 4d a little bit, i understood that i will create it in cinema 4d, beacuse of ease to use and flexibility.. One of main reason also was - procedural noises.. Cinema 4d has the most wide range list of noises to make some cool stuff, with mograph and particles it's unstoppable!! Houdini even more flexible, but quiet difficult to create even simple stuff, but of course it's just my opinion.. I want more freedom to create something, not to think a lot about how to do that, and this is where cinema 4d is really shines and it's the most stable software i ever learnt!!!! It's not a promo for cinema 4d, it's i little bit about my workflow!!! Clarisse IFX is super cool software to rendering and texturing!!! Main reason i use it because of it can handle trillion polygons on the fly and i can see results emmediatly!!! The disadventage - quiet difficult to learn and understand, but now it's much easier lo learn!!! I almost every day try new technics to make it even cooler!! For exsample yesterday i found how to do terraced rocks, and after some experiments, i will do a complete image like this, i posted below!! it is my earlier experiment, but it was fun to do!! Now my latest experements are far better and i'm glad i always found new ways to do interesting stuff, it makes me even more excited about how many ways i have to create things i imagine!! A bit later i will buy new PC and will explore new heights!! I' m glad i'm here, because of you guys and may be girls ;D i'm trying harder, i'm inspiring form you and from talented peoples, i'm so thankful for that!!! ;D ;) ;)
