Title: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 11, 2014, 07:25:00 AM
Once again no typical TG render.
My wife's comment: "where are the flowers?" Well, there aren't too many indeed.
The fighter, the platform, the spheres, and the column like things hanging from the ceiling are models I got either by purchasing or downloading for free. Especially the latter is quite interesting. It's a model from Turbosquid called "Zenith". It's an incredibly detailed space station. And it's free! Unfortunately there are no texture coordinates, so texturing is a bit tricky.
The sphere model is called "Merzraumer" by Waldemar Barkowski (Spacebones), a very nice model of the Perry Rhodan universe.

The rest is made by myself. It's been a lot of texture work. Raytrace objects was left unchecked to get real displacement.
I had to render the fighter in the foreground separately, because my computer didn't allow any further objects (too less RAM :() But that gave me the opportunity to add some motion blur. The flares are postwork of course. So is the chromatic aberration, my favourite pw filter ;D.

Rendertimes were 22 hours for the main image plus an extra of six hours for the fighter (it was larger on the original image). Original resolution 2400X1350 px.

Thanks guys. I forgot to mention the people standing on the platform. I don't remember where they came from. Sometimes I find something on my harddrive which suits to the scene...

I am a big fan of John Berkey sci-fi art.
Now you take a place beside him.

Excellent.

Good Lord!  That's movie-quality!  If the station is still in a planet's atmosphere then the lighting is perfect.  If it's in deep-space, then the shadows would be darker and sharper.  But either way, this is an incredible example of TG's GI algorithm.
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 12, 2014, 05:24:56 AM
Yes, it's still in the planet's atmosphere. It wasn't meant to be a space scene. That's why the people on the platform don't wear space suits (they are hardly visible, I know ;))
And yes, it's a pleasure to see the GISD work. When I was sitting in front of the screen, watching the render progress, I really enjoyed the moment after the render was finished, the clock was standing still, and finally the GISD showed it's magic. That's really an improvement for areas that are not in bright sunlight.

I too love that 'GISD' moment. While awaiting that final pixel to render my eyes are glued to the screen in anticipation of the "Quickening".  Oh well, nice to know our obsessions are shared ;)

By the way Hannes you said "too less RAM" in your first post.
How much RAM do you have?
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 16, 2014, 02:08:20 PM
3GB. Last year I tried to put more RAM into my Computer, but it refused to work. 3GB seems to be the maximum. When I'm grown up, I'll buy a decent machine!!!!

Hannes, if you do what you do with a system that can only take 3GB of ram, I would be afraid to see what you can do with 32-64GB.
Probably you could make a feature length animated film :o

Yes, get a 64-bit machine! You'll go skyhigh! I mean it, it's worth it.

my hat is off to you Hannes, & my jaw is resting on my desk next to my keyboard.

i hope your able to upgrade your ram someday.

Me too, Zlain!!! ;D
Kadri, it's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 6000+ 3.00 GHz.
If I would not need new glasses soon, this would be next on my wishlist! But what sense does a new computer make, if I don't see anything?

wow, good job
i suggested to you the software Mandelbulb 3D,  ites free from fractalforums , you can do the same work my be more and with animation.
but really your image is wonderful, but you need a new machine like i7 with minimum 8 GB Ram

my first TG2 capable machine was a intel Q6600 with 4GB of ram, but i had win xp 32bit for my OS, so it was more like a 3gb machine, until i upgraded to win7.  :)

ill upgrade to 32gb one of these days, i think there's only been one time i've seen my ram usage hit 90%
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Dune on March 18, 2014, 03:14:06 AM
I don't undestand why you only have access to 3GB on a 64-bit machine.... are you perhaps still running 32-bits XP? 64-bit XP can access more than 3GB.
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 18, 2014, 03:48:16 AM
I don't understand that as well! :(
No Ulco, I'm running 64bit Win7 on my machine, and last year I bought 8GB RAM for my computer (two 4GB modules). Put it in, nothing happened. The computer didn't even start. Brought them back, got four 2GB modules. Put it in, nothing happened. The computer didn't even start. Tried to put in only 4GB. Nothing happened. The computer didn't even start.
Drove back to the shop, killed the guy who said it should work, got arrested, went to prison, broke jail, came home and put in my 3GB again, cried a bit and accepted my situation. Till now.

Wrong memory then? Checked the mobo specs? Clicked them tight? I had that once, put memory in, but machine saw only part. Realized later that it wasn't fully tightened.
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 18, 2014, 03:59:07 AM
Ulco, you encouraged me to try it again, even though I have no idea what mobo specs means. Clicking them tight means checking if they are correctly inserted, right? I did that.
Anyway the survivors of that shop offered me to come early in the morning right after they opened and to bring my computer with me to try it directly in the shop. I think I'll do that.

You should, Hannes. Good idea. Put 16 gigs in!
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Nacer Eddine on March 18, 2014, 08:41:52 AM
honestly all depends on how terragen work with rendering, which iam sure is to have a good processor
about Mandelbulb 3D, if you like the space and flying through
Here are some experiments I've done with this software (to give you an idea):
with bad resolution hehehehe, but with HD i need more hours depending the processor also.

Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 18, 2014, 09:22:01 AM
Thank you for your examples. Mandelbulb is truly quite interesting, but it's quite different from what I wanted to achieve.
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Kadri on March 18, 2014, 05:50:50 PM

Hannes hard to say from here what your problem is.
Ones i had a similar problem.
It was the mainboard that refused to work with more then 4 GB memory.
Some memories work and some not.
Depends on the brand and model etc too.
After so many unsuccessful attempts with different RAM etc.
i got later a new mainboard and put 32 GB in it.
It worked right away and no problems since then.

Yes, it sounds like the motherboard (mobo) is the issue. If you are interested in building your own PC, Newegg.com is a great source for the components and very reasonable costs. I got most of my components from them. If you tell them what you want to build and ask for their recommendations and compatibility, they will list them for you.
Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Hannes on March 19, 2014, 06:02:48 AM
Thanks guys. Yes, I think my mobo (I learned a new abbreviation! ;D) doesn't want to accept more than 3GB RAM. I tested different brands. Nothing worked, so I think in the near future I'll get a complete new computer with as much RAM inside as possible. Thanks for your link, Bob! I assume, they are in the states and shipping will be a bit expensive. I have a similar company around the corner ( http://www.alternate.de/html/index.html ).Twentyfive minutes per car, so that wouldn't be a problem.

I got recently a refurbished Dell T-5500 Workstation from the below link in a very good price:
www.bargainhardware.co.uk

This modell is designed for 3D. You can put more that 40Gig of RAM and even a dual octa core Xeon CPU that will give you 24 Processing cores in TG 8) 8)

You're welcome Hannes. Yes, ordering from across the pond would be expensive. The advantage of building your own system avoids having all the junk that commercial systems load on their equipment. And, when you want to try and upgrade a commercial system, you will find that in most cases you can't since their components are proprietary. For what we do here today, an I7 processor with 16GB of RAM may be the way to go.

Title: Re: Coming home
Post by: Dune on March 19, 2014, 12:37:50 PM
It does if you have many assets to be loaded. For my museum file I needed 13gig or so, less would have crashed TG. For average use 8 would do fine, though.

I believe it does, mainly for rendering. I have a seven year old system with 8GB and it still runs like a charm.
