Utilizing Hetzen's Zoom/Bulge function, you can easily obtain expanding smoke columns by placing it's centre where you want expansion, and adjusting radius and such.
I think this method is easier to control than multiple surface layers and multiple altitudes to keep track of.

How do you get the "inclined" look? (if is really inclined). Really nice experiments...

Also the Zoom / Bulge function is shared in the Function section. Really powerful a lot of uses that haven't been discovered yet. Like it could be use to scale one side of a square simple shape, etc.
