Title: GEOTIFF terrains preview.
Post by: bigben on July 04, 2014, 06:57:48 AM
Hi All

For the impatient, I'm uploading some of the data I've been playing with. (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,18550.0.html (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,18550.0.html))

Global elevation data of the earth with bathymetry:
http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/earth/ (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/earth/)
Numbers in the filename indicate the resolution e.g. 0_1 = 0.1°/pixel
Throwing in a Blue marble image as well

Grand Canyon
http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/ (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/)
I will most likely split these up into more manageable chunks, so these will eventually change. Includes a sample TGD that loads the padding terrain. Includes a blue marble texture matching the global image above.
3 x 10m terrains, main, northeast and west. 2 lower resolution terrains for padding.

All the tifs are LZW compressed. Old school directory listings.

... but you're gonna have to wait just a little longer as they'll take a wee bit of time to upload  :P

[edit] All done now.

Thanks so much! :D

Will download in the evening (1 pm here now)

Hi Ben,

I'm afraid you have shared the wrong tgd file along with the tif's.
Also, one of the tifs isn't loading. It gives an error, not clear why. (grand canyon north east)

Could you may be reupload and use the "gather project" function from TG's file menu to export the files, as the tgd you uploaded also contains incorrect paths?

Thanks a bunch in advance for your time :)

Cheers,
Martin

Sorry for the delay. Fixed the TGD. It may have also been the first one I made before I got the bathymetry data merged in. I hadn't uploaded the one padding terrain I kept (now online). http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/GrandCanyon_0-1.tif (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/GrandCanyon_0-1.tif). There's also a global terrain and texture from http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/earth/ (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/earth/)
As for the northeast terrain, I hadn't tried it in TG since creating it and yes there is a problem with the file. I've deleted it from the server. It was mainly an addition that extended the 10m data to the beginning of an old animation test I made (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,1843.msg17951.html#msg17951 (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,1843.msg17951.html#msg17951)), but the "main" tiff covers pretty much most of the canyon.

If I were to redo the animation I'd create a lot more geotiffs to optimise the resolution of the terrain to suit the camera path. This would greatly reduce the file size of images loaded, although it's a very project-specific approach.

Still sorting out file naming and tiling patterns.  Here's a test set for the Tetons.  3x10m of the main range, an optional 10m with all of Dove Lake and 3 padding terrains.
http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/tetons/ (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/tetons/)
10m terrains are around 40-50mb each, padding terrains are only 4-5mb. Attached TGD loads only the central 10m terrain and the padding terrains

off to explore the tetons...thanx Ben

This one's not as RAM hungry as the Grand Canyon, and I guess I'll have to throw in a 10m bit for "that bend" of snake river http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Adams_The_Tetons_and_the_Snake_River.jpg (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Adams_The_Tetons_and_the_Snake_River.jpg)

Any idea how to find this view Ben...I'd really like to do this scene and as we have the tetons, why not?

I'll add an additional terrain and a TGD for the view. The coordinates are in this image (I had the cursor over the location). You can set the coordinates for the apex of the planet to that to help you locate it.

That site you linked does have a lot of photos that look like good candidates for trying in TG. I wonder if that barn was photographed from enough different angles to reconstruct a model of it. [edit]OMG... http://goo.gl/uv2vyY (http://goo.gl/uv2vyY) [/edit]

Wow, thanks a lot again for this great dataset Ben :D
Going to download it tonight!

That photograph from Ansel Adam is ace.
You must be able to reproduce something similar in TG, but I guess it would also involve (quite) a bit of reading on Adam's zone system.
Now TG has .exr output which should facilitate this workflow perfectly, so in the end it's a matter of balancing and emulating those zones.

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks Ben, and Mr. Google Earth...D'oh...I shudda thought of that as I'm always sayin  "Ask Mr Goole" when ever someone asks  "Where's dat?".....

I believe there are even whole communities dedicated to reproducing shots of Ansel Adams, including GPS coordinates, camera models/lenses, weather conditions and the whole kit and kaboodle...

I don't think you'd need to know the zone system to reproduce the images in TG... and having read his books, I think a lot of people over-complicated it more than necessary. But it will be very challenging reproducing some of the lighting.

So...is "that bend of snake river" up there, or am I just not finding it Ben?

Needs the 10m DEM to see the river bed.  I had a lot of other data loaded in GM last night so i won't get to the terrain until tonight. but here's a marker for the spot. I've worked with this terrain in TG before so I know my way around it fairly well ;)

[edit] corrected TGD is 2 posts down[/edit]

HAHAHAHAHA... wrong spot  :-[

I've uploaded the Snake River supplemental terrain and here's a geotiff map you can use for reference. The TGD loads all of the files

Still working here. That subdomain is just for static downloads so I haven't set up homepage at the root level. Everything else will just be old school directory listings to make downloading easier.

Thank you Ben! This is a good pick of possible locations to focus on. Really nice place.

A bit distracted Ben as I'm off in Bryce(my only modeling app) working on that barn. Bryce is NOT  an easy modeler but much better since you can covert to polys along the way...those Booleans would make me nuts otherwise. Missing my Imagine3D a lot right now. Back to TG3 soon.

Sounds very interesting.  I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Bryce is still going? Wow. That was the first ever 3d package I used.. in 2003! Downloaded off Kazaa I think.

I think it's available free from DAZ or was a while back....
