I'm pretty sure an asteroid makes a crater only after it has hit the ground. Cool render nonetheless.

The formation of the crater would start if the surface was liquid at normal Earth temperatures. Very dynamic image!

crater looks n could be the backass of a wave imo...if that cloud/object could have a thinner cloud on the surface to resemble a shockwave...this could work better
