This is a composite shot which consists of three elements.

1. The Background Plate of the New york Skyline.

2. The Ship Which is either a physical miniature or CGI and form my recollection about this scene the ship is a CGI element.

3. The Clouds which where done with the cloud tank method which was pioneered on the Motion Picture: Close Encounters of the Third Kind and has been used in countless other Motion Pictures including Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Toward the end of the film) and Poltergeist.

These elements where later combined in post production.

Regards to you.

Thanks for the reply and the detail ..i didnt actually mean the whole picture i should of been more specific and understand the new york skyline etc would need to be some sort of post process but im just curious if i could make the cloud and if so how would i go about it ?

i could probably mess about in cs or something to get the firey glow into the clouds ..unless tg2 has a way of getting it ...and the explosive look of the cloud is what im after :)

thanks though :)

I've never triede it but you could try makeing huge clouds and puting a light in the center and have a moder of a ship flying though.

Will

yeah a light source in the clouds, and use multiple cloud layers where one has a slight red tint to it?...

might also need a mask/image shader to restrict the cloud..

i might have a go at this after my render is done...

Thanks for the replies guys ..ive been messing about but not come up with anything close
was also trying to use an image map on the clouds of the actual picture to see how it turned out
but it wasnt good lol
be nice to see someones attempts though and soon as ive managed something simular i'll be back lol

ps ive tried the fluffy clouds thread but will go over it again thanks :)

I just gave it a (low quality render) try.
I put in a lo res flying saucer and two additional orange light sources with multiplier increased up to "1e+007" (Strength: slider up to "1e+006" and type in a 7 instead of the 6).
Maybe this is what you tried to achieve?
Title: Re: im trying to make this
Post by: old_blaggard on February 13, 2007, 11:52:20 AM
Not bad, not bad at all.  I think that with a bit more detail and some refinement in the clouds and UFO, this could be pretty darn good.

Post by: Dark Fire on February 13, 2007, 12:05:16 PM
That's a very good try. I can see that, with some refinements, those pictures could be imitated quite successfully.

See ive always wanted to try something differnt than the normal tg renders of landscape ..ya no you start to run out of ideas after a while so i think its good to aim for some movie themed pictures ya no ..loads out there really ive seen some amasing sky scenes in the new kong film ..just need an obj ape lol

definatly need to have a go at this myself good work m8 :)

Thanks!
The UFO is a very simple disk with a nice texture. I created it in 3ds Max and exported it as .obj.
I think I'll render it in better quality overnight.

no offence but the problem with movie themed renders is that the idea isnt yours hence its not considered unique....and you never run out of ideas....I dont have much experience in 3d world as I am still in skool but thats how I like to think.....

Hey no offence taken each to there own ideas isnt it but Good way of thinking but
really any pictures made "based" on any movie isnt going to look exact is it so there pretty unique really in my eyes ..like if this thread was just can someone make a cloud render with a space ship in ,,ppl would be sayin wooaahh that looks cool like something from blah blah...so i dont see the harm in it :)

Anyway it's great fun to do scenes like that and you can learn from the challenge.
Here is my new render:

I added some details to the ship, increased the samples in the quality settings of the clouds (although it's still a bit grainy) and added some more lights. Hope you like it.

In overall I prefer realistic landscape renders, but this is a really great sci-fi image ;D Very cool glowing clouds and I love the details on the saucer!
Now it just needs to be animated  ;)

Title: Re: im trying to make this
Post by: Oshyan on February 14, 2007, 04:57:41 PM
Originally it was just a hobby project I believe. Matt started it when he was still in University, on the Amiga. I  have the source code to "Terragen 1" (aka Terragen 0.1) sitting around somewhere, but I've never had an Amiga to test it on. ;D

After that I believe he ported it to the PC and then made it public in a limited demo form, probably realizing the commercial potential but unsure what he wanted to do with it just yet. He was still in school at this point and he published the first Terragen website on his school's server. You used to be able to access the original page using archive.org - the address was http://www.york.ac.uk/~mpf103/terragen/ Unfortunately it seems that the university is now blocking archiving of its pages and that means all previous archives are now inaccessible as well.

I suppose it was around that time that the original mailing list was setup on Onelist, later to be bought by another company, finally turning into Yahoo Groups. I believe it was founded by Rainer Duckerhoff who is still around from time to time. A year or two ago Yahoo claimed they'd be getting rid of older messages in large groups, but it seems that most, if not all of the original messages are still there in the archives, all the way back to 1998. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/terragen/messages/1

Anyway so TG was made public, people started downloading and talking and checking it out, and it grew from there. The fact that it was free and doing things that no other program at the time could do, producing already great results, was very interesting to people. The community grew fast, now over 5000 members on the Yahoo group I think, and in only 2 months we have over 1600 members registered here.

After Matt left school he worked more on TG then got a job at Digital Domain, one of the top film and TV special effects companies in the world, where he laid the groundwork for Terragen 2 in creating the underlying "TGD" rendering system. Matt worked at DD for 4 years I believe and during this time public updates of Terragen were infrequent, which frustrated many. Matt did manage to negotiate a good deal with DD whereby he could keep much of his source code and release updates for TG, despite the proprietary nature of his work at DD.

Since he has left DD Terragen 2 has been the main focus and of course we're all familiar with the delays there as well. However significant changes have continued since Matt's Digital Domain days and with the release of the Technology Preview I think we have turned over a new leaf in Terragen and Planetside's development. 2007 is the year that Terragen will come into its own and prove itself.

Still, despite all the progress, I sometimes enjoy revisiting the very oldest TG versions. I have 0.4, which still works on XP... :D

Also do you do coding or are you just doing fourm moderation stuff?

You're welcome. I've always been fascinated by the program and its history. I'm something of a collector too as you may have gathered from my post (I have just about every publicly released version of TG and many besides). So it's nice to hear when other people are interested in it on that level too. I've actually thought about writing some kind of more organized and researched "history of Terragen" article, but I don't know if there would really be much interest. ;D

OK, here is the final image. I changed the POV, added some clouds, some haze, some F18s and some terrain.
Little postwork: I added motionblur to the fighters, engine glow and smoketrails in photoshop.

Post by: slashedhacker on February 15, 2007, 03:50:36 PM
Unless you have an absurdly fast computer that costs hundreds of dollars, pictures that are actually far more realistic/cooler looking than the one you've managed to make are not easy in this program. Just use photoshop. It's really good at that kind of stuff, especially if you have a drawing tablet. Preferably a Wacom Intuous3, which is what I got, but its like $600, got it for my christmas!  ;D I could find some examples on a website, but the one i'm paticularly familiar with is blocked right now :(

Fantastic work on the final version of the image!

slashedhacker, Terragen is actually a lot easier for many people to use than it would be for them to learn to hand-paint something like that to the same level of realism. But if you have the talent to do so, more power to you! ;D

Title: Re: im trying to make this
Post by: Hannes on February 16, 2007, 03:27:02 AM
Thank you!

Shlashedhacker, I'm planning to buy a wacom, so maybe I'll try to do something like that.
But at that time doing pictures like mine with TG2TP is great fun and a challenge too.
I hope that the render times will be better in future versions, because this image took about twelve hours to render, but if you compare it to other programs, it's not that much. I don't know, how long it would take in Vue6 to render a picture like that. There's a lot of thick volumetric clouds, so it won't be a matter of minutes.

King tiger 666: the fighters are imported and on the original render. I extracted them to another layer in photoshop, blurred them and put it all back together. Then I added the engine glow and the trails.
