Title: Terragen reads in Chan file rotation values incorrectly
Post by: Adam Chrystie on January 12, 2007, 03:16:37 AM
Terragen's Camera Chan file reader incorrectly reads the rotational values from chan file generated by Digital DOmains Chan File Export Mel script perhaps.

Terragen 2 seems to be inverting the Rotation Y & Z values which makes the camera view incorrect.

Example from Chan file exported out of Maya by a Mel script Digital Domain made available on Highend 3D:

1   0   1000   -1300   -20   -30   1.75291e-16   42.1034

is imported in to Terragen as

Frame 1
X: 0
Y: 1000
Z: -1300
RotX: -20
RotY: 30
RotZ: -1.75291e-16

Is DD's script wrong perhaps? I could easily tweak the Mel the invert the values..but i'd like
to be sure Terragen 2 is using the standard chan file specifications of course.

System Info:

Maya 8 32-Bit Ubuntu Linux
Mac OS X 10.4 Terragen Deep Animation 1.8.64.0

Is it changing the co-ordinates to a left hand system?

Hi Adam,

Have you verified visually that the cameras do not match? TG2's coordinate system is not the same as the coordinate system used by the chan format, so TG needs to interpret the values differently to make them match.

Hi Matt,

Sorry I've not reported back about this issue. I got a little side tracked.

I'll give it another try this weekend and post my results and some scene files too.

Ok, I've done another test and the chan file motions imported from Maya seem top work fine.
I see no reversals in motion. I animated the camers and objects in maya and exported them to terragen with no troubles.

I've returned to the project which requires me to merge Terragen and Maya data so I'll kep reporting on how it goes.
