I have read that TG 2 has bugs. Isn't this a problem (for newbies) ??
The other programs you recommend ... I will look into them.
I think the main problems with TG2 are that it is very slow and much more difficult to use than TG0.9.
I don't recommend looking for ready made world or atmosphere files etc.
What fun would there be to get a world made by someone else and then just render it?
The files are nothing but saved settings, you can create those yourself. You can use those files that come with TG as starting point.
One tip I would like to give for creating textures. Always use water level 0, so that you can use the same texture files with your other terrains and still use things like "wet sand" layer. You can adjust the altitude range of terrain to set the required water level related to terrain.
For creating mountains, I guess you mean the manual terrain editing tools. They are indeed very basic and have only a limited use. The normal way to create terrain is to let Terragen create it. It can create very realistic results. Just adjust the parameters and camera angle until you get the result you want. You can further change the terrain using the tools in Modify window (canyonize, glaciate etc.).
An external program such as World Machine gives more options, such as erosion and terrace effects. If you want to edit the terrain manually, you can do it with a paint program (that supports 16-bit color depth). To do this, you can convert the terrain file into TIF file using my
TerraConv program. You can find some examples / tutorials of what you can do with this method from my Terragen page below.
