Title: Are you working on a Terragen VR Challenge submission? Weigh in!
Post by: Oshyan on March 22, 2016, 03:39:31 PM
We've already received a number of entries for the Terragen VR Challenge, with more than a week still left before our submission deadline. So we got curious about just how many people are working on (or have already submitted) entries. Let us know if you're toiling away in secret! We want to hear from you. :D

I'm currently working on my third entry (2 submitted), and I have a fourth in mind (maybe a fifth if time allows).
As you can guess, I love this challenge!

I've been working on a somewhat elaborate and weird world, which I'm about to send in, but I would also like to make something more 'of this world', if time permits. I hope you guys get lots of entries!

I have been very involved with my concept. If given enough time I may post a teaser soon.

Hi there Oshyan/folks, I am in, and will post some stuff when I get a chance (I have a couple of sketches I will try to put up), haven't been able to spend too much time on this one, so who knows.... I may even dig up my doomed Icelandic Saga! ;)
oh yeah, and one of my macs died again!!
this time I had to do a complete erase and reinstall....
fingers and toes crossed!

Working on one. Not too hard what I am trying, but limited time. may not make it.
Also looked to use old files per the rules, but the one I wanted most for the contest has disappeared, really hope its just lost and not "recycled" :-\

This is a great contest and I really support PS getting into it. May end up only being moral support from me though :(

Certainly hope you get some great stuff, and am looking forward to seeing it all!

I only have had enough time and computing power to work on one project but I am close to being finished. The populating alone takes slightly over an hour's time. Maybe a couple of more test renders before final.

I don't like challenges much actually, but with my current financial position getting Terragen 4 for free would be nice of course.
Still doing models for the images and refining the terrains so much i can. Feels like a rush. Hope i can finish it in time.

I am working on something, and will be uploading by Tuesday.   But I am working with a free edition of TG. is it acceptable?

I find it very interesting contest. The subject is vast allowing us to submit past project pictures. Not easy on the time, most of us have at times during the year less free time. I just hope to finish in time. I would like tg4 and I like Xfrog plants. I want to win.   :)

Got inspired today so I did start on a challenge project. If I could only get the render going, the scene basic setup is ready, a nice panorama but no vegetation and clouds yet.

Yes, you can definitely use the free version to create your entry. :)

I am working hard at redoing one of my locations after it would not render.  I will be rendering down to the finish line, instead of turning things in a day early, as l would have liked.  I am enjoying this, and could really use a full version of Terragen4, as my cashflow is very limited right now.

We have extended the submission deadline to April 11th at 11:59PM Pacific Time! Use the extra time to refine an existing scene and resubmit, or create a whole new entry. Remember: we don't need super high detail/quality renders (i.e. high render settings), but we do want the most well designed and detailed scenes.

Good luck!

Good to hear about the extension! Can do a few much needed tweaks :-)

Just out of interest, what size does you all at Planetside plan to render a winning entry for an immersive VR?

Yes, I am still quite curious about what happens after the contest too. Despite the relatively polite refusal to answer  ;D

it was more of a technical question really - just wondered how big an image would have to be to work in VR

I know, I was just poking the bear.
This article will be of interest to you. The answer to your question though is, it is determined by the max resolution allowed by the device. I guess some will only view it on their PC, or maybe even UHD TV, but here is the max for head sets as far as I have heard lately: http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/starvr-vr-headset-5120-1440-resolution/

I also ran across  an article that says 8kX8K (per eye) is not enough: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/09/virtual-perfection-why-8k-resolution-per-eye-isnt-enough-for-perfect-vr/

Hope that will give you some ideas. Lots of "who knows?" left in VR yet. ;D

I thought the original deadline was too tight. Did not even start on this knowing I would not have enough time.  Just got back from vacation and now I see it's been moved back. A pity. Some great projects, though, I am enjoying it...

Do we get confirmation e-mails, after we submitted our entries? Just to be sure it's there.

I got a pm by Matt for my first entry. For my second one I haven't received a message yet, but it was yesterday, so no need to hurry, I know.
I just want to be sure, that it's there.

I received a few seconds after sending a confirmation. Maybe you made a mistake in the transcript of your email address. I feel that the confirmation is done automatically.

Yes, there should be an automatic confirmation email. Perhaps check your spam folder? I can confirm we got your entry in any case Hannes. :D

Good to know. Thanks, Oshyan.
This is strange. I'm using Thunderbird, and as far as I know I don't have a spam folder.

Who is your mail provider? Most of them do some form of spam filtering. Thunderbird also has anti-spam systems, but you may not have them activated.

I don't have it activated. I do get some junk mail, so I'm not sure what the reason is. Could you maybe send me a Planetside test mail, just to know if it works?

I don't really have a setup to send a single email directly from the server. You could try the Password Reset option on the store login page. I think as long as you don't go through with the reset (click the link) it shouldn't mess anything up, or at the worst you have to just re-set your password. http://planetside.co.uk/store-login

Oshyan, I just tried it, and immediately got an answer from the server, so I guess the automatic answering after submitting an entry didn't work. I didn't get a confirmation for my first entry as well, but Matt sent me a PM, so I thought, this is it...

Btw, thanks!!!
