Title: Daddy's home! WIP (finished animation on page 8)
Post by: Hannes on September 03, 2015, 04:45:43 AM
Here is a frame of my actual animation. It's going to be a two scenes animation in the end, and this is from the second one (there is no first one yet).
I have some GI flicker issues, I discussed here:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,20462.msg203139.html#msg203139

There will be some interaction between some of the troopers plus the already mentioned crowd-simulation-simulation  ;)
The boxes (or whatever this is...) in the foreground are only there to hide the sliding feet.

It's going to take some time until I can show something new. At the moment it takes 36 hours to render 300 frames.

Edit: finished animation on page 8 (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,20463.msg205744.html#msg205744)!

I'm looking forward to this. Good luck with the GI, Hannes. I can't help you there, no experience in animation I'm afraid.

Thanks guys! I was 16 yo when the first SW movie came out. I clearly remember the moment when the huge imperial ship appeared "above my head" and I almost peed my pants... ;)

Looks good Hannes.

That first scene was the most i liked probably in Star Wars.
The other space scenes were great too but it was probably the first look-awe thing :)

Michael: I'm afraid it will be a bit more subtle, but I hope that I could achieve what I wanted to...
Dancing storm troopers would have been quite nice, but making them walk was tough enough!  ;)

Actually I'm reworking this fantastic model of the Imperial Star Destroyer made by a guy called Ansel Hsiao who named himself Fractalsponge:
http://www.scifi3d.com/details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=8&key=534
The UVW-mapping isn't really working, so I'm trying to improve it and I added some different textures.

Terrific! Will the ship be animated as well?

In this case I do it the same way ILM did in the seventies. The Imperial Star Destroyer stays stationary, but the camera is animated so that it looks like the ship is moving. Thus I have some kind of object motion blur although there is none in TG (yet!!!!!!). And the good thing is, I don't have to animate the lightsources (there are sixteen lightsources in the ship's hangar as well) and the localised clouds on the thrusters. It would be possible to do that, but like that it's much easier.
There will be the Lambda fighter starting off the big ship, bringing Darth Vader and the troopers to the station I already showed. I hope I can manage to animate the wings of the fighter, which are only in the "up"-position, when it has landed. Maybe I'll try the same way I did for the walking animation: using a population of the fighter (and two more for the separate side wings) with only one instance each, animating the wing movement and for the overall flying animation I'll animate the populations. I hope it will work, but I'm quite confident.

I'm planning to create an opening scene, that's quite similar to the original one of Episode 4 (is it 4? The very first movie? I'm a bit confused...). It's not intended to be 100% identical, but it should be recognizable.
Here is a comparison of the original scene to my own WIP. In my second version I added a lot of stuff into the hangar. It was a bit empty there in Fractalsponge's original model. Still not enough to my taste. It's great fun to add a lot of stuff like that.

Until my computer explodes...

Indeed!!

I added more stuff to the hangar. There has to be a shot that shows all this. I'll see...
Here is a close up shot of the interior without motion blur. There are some issues with some faces. Have to fix that.
It's quite pleasing to see how TG can be fed with lots of stuff without even burping! ;)

That's quite a shot. Awesome detail.
Short question related to animation; is it preferred to use motion blur in a 3 second 'camera move animation'? In my case, mainly clouds and 2 objects, one stationary, one moving with the view.
Title: Re: Daddy's home! WIP
Post by: Hannes on September 14, 2015, 02:41:48 AM
It really depends on how fast the camera is moving. If the movement is quite slow, you could try to render without MB to keep rendertimes shorter, but it may look more natural with MB on.
Title: Re: Daddy's home! WIP
Post by: Hannes on September 14, 2015, 03:37:19 AM
At the moment I'm rendering the ship passing by. I rendered the background separately as one single large image, and everything will be comped together when the ship's animation is done.
Like that I have a better quality for the stars especially, and I can use the large backdrop even for the initial vertical pan from above down to the planet before the ship appears like in the original ILM sequence. Tested it, and I'm happy with it.
But maybe it's too good. Using a single image as backdrop may look artificial if there is absolutely no movement or other "artifacts". Maybe I'll have to add some very subtle things to make it look like a regular shot. Anyway, it's always fun to make something that has already worked out look a bit crappier. ;D ;D ;D

Also Hannes, I know it's taken a little while to potentially get your Fantasy scene rendered in HD (there are some technical issues that came up from testing it, which has caused delay but also been very good to help us catch these errors!). But I want to say here also that *if* you have trouble rendering this at 1080p, we may be able to help, depending on per-frame render time. Hopefully you can handle it on your own though as the Fantasy scenes are rather demanding. ;)

Thanks for the offer, Oshyan. Much appreciated!!!
At the moment I'm rendering the whole thing at 800 X 450 px. Not much, I know, but since there will be way more than the initally planned three scenes, I think it's a good compromise, because I need to know how the final thing looks like, before I start to render it in Full HD. Or take your offer ;) At the moment I still don't know, how long it all will be in the end, or what will happen in the next scene. Or in between.
I have finished most of the opening scene, two scenes in between, and the final scene (which I'll probably have to improve). Don't expect a smart plot. It's going to be quite absurd and hopefully funny.

Post by: Oshyan on September 18, 2015, 03:34:07 PM
Yes, I think it certainly makes sense to do a lower resolution version to get it all working the way you want before going HD. Even then sometimes the HD render reveals flaws you might not have seen before. But at least you can try to get a sense of it with lower resolution tests.

Just finished the 20th Century Fox opener (found a nice free model in the net and modified it a bit. Rendered in TG as well) and the inevitable text crawl. The latter is not rendered in TG. It's quite a bit tough to get the timing right, so that it fits to the music. But it's great fun!!!
Sorry again for not showing anything, but I guess it's more fun to see the final thing without knowing everything.

Here is something to show. I need a scene where Vader gets off his Lambda shuttle. The model I have is fine for distant shots, but too low res for closer ones. So I decided to cheat (I love it!!). I found an image of the high resolution ramp section of this particular shuttle in a 3D forum made by Ansel Hsiao aka Fractalsponge - the same guy who made this incredible Imperial Star Destroyer model.
This image looks great, but it's perfectly clean, so I loaded it into Photoshop, cut out a few things, added some others and gave it some subtle color.
Vader will only be seen from his head to the chest, so I guess, this will be enough.

Btw almost 5000 frames are done....

I just sent an e-mail to Fractalsponge to ask for permission to show how I used his image. A little late, I know.
If he doesn't give his permission (which I don't believe), I'll remove these images. And I'll have to think, how I am going to achieve this scene.
But I am quite confident.

Btw, for another scene I wanted to use an image of a quite well known artist, and I asked for permission to use it, which he generously gave me. I'll tell you more, when it's finished.

A frame of a desert hunt scene.
It's way more difficult than I expected. So the camera was animated, the vehicles that follow each other as well, and everything was OK. I created a GI cache file for the scene (5 frames sequence step) and rendered a test animation using 5 cache files per frame.
The result looked totally crappy! GI flickering on the objects like hell, probably due to the fast motions of the vehicles, and the motion blur blurred not only the landscape which it should do, but also the objects at the same amount, although they weren't moving that fast in relation to the camera.
So I rendered out the scene with objects made invisible, so that they cast shadows on the terrain. And then I started to create a GI cache file for the objects with GI sample quality of 5 with a sequence step of 2 (Motion blur disabled). I'll see if I get some decent results by using some more files to blend per frame than usual. In the end I'll have to render out a mask sequence for the objects to comp all the stuff together. Thus I'll have the chance to create some motion blur for the objects in PW that hopefully fits well to the TG MB of the terrain. I hope my plan will work.

Actually it is special. The flickering is better but still not acceptable. Did some tests with a GI cache file of every fourth frame and 20 files to blend. Still flickering.

Cool, yes! Any suggestions?

Do you have objects moving in world space? You probably need to calculate GI for every frame. Blending might cause problems if you're blending with caches that have objects in different positions, but it might still work OK if you at least have a cache for each frame.

Thanks, Matt!
Yes, there are two objects flying around with the camera following them quite fast. So, you're recommending to calculate GI for each frame. How many frames to blend would you use for the interpolation?

Post by: Hannes on October 07, 2015, 03:10:35 AM
OK, I calculated a GI cache file sequence with each single frame and did a short test using 12 files to blend. Seems to be working as far as I can see now. There may be a little bit of flicker left, but I hope it's going to be acceptable.

Matt's suggestion is certainly good, given the object movement. I would also want to know what the actual GI settings are, detail and sample quality, supersample on/off, etc. Hopefully blending of 12 gi frames isn't necessary! I'd hope 5 or 8 would do (with the right other settings), and should be faster to render.

Post by: Hannes on October 07, 2015, 03:04:31 PM
Oshyan, the settings are GI cache detail 3, GI sample quality 8, supersample off (I should have tried it... :(). I created a GI cache file per frame and used 20 (!!) files to blend. Rendertimes were not too bad, because I used an animated crop region with only the objects inside (about six hours for 225 frames). The background was already rendered separately.
The flickering is almost gone. The actual amount of leftover flicker can be interpreted as changing light bouncing off the ground as Doc Charley mentioned in his own thread. I'm happy with it.

The solution to render out the background with TG's native motion blur and then rendering the objects separately without MB and comping the whole thing together works like a charm.
Adding motion blur for the objects in postwork looks really good. Thus every part of the scene has it's own more or less correct blurring.

Glad to hear you solved it then! This is definitely a challenging scene for TG currently. Hopefully we can improve on the results in these kinds of scenarios in the future so such "acrobatics" and extreme settings aren't necessary. Can't wait to see the final result!

You cannot imagine how pleased I am about this news, Hannes!
Unfortunately I feel the duty to work on my Viper in the desert again!   :P  ;D
I'm still a little afraid from comping the desert and the Viper ... But I was also scared from the dust clouds... so let's see what happens  ;)

Your frame looks very cool anyway!

Funny thing: I use 20 files to blend, too! My thoughts when choosing that value: The GI blending files give a kind of hint for the illumination and while rendering an average illumination is created to avoid flickering. So the longer the distance between changing illumination-values the less flickering... Best result I got with every 10trh frame a file and 20 frames blending...

Title: Re: Daddy's home! WIP
Post by: Hannes on October 22, 2015, 03:58:39 PM
I'm quite busy. Today I finished two more scenes. Still 40 frames of the last scene to render!!!
Probably I'll have to adjust some things, maybe rerender a few frames, and then I'll try to add sound. This is going to be an adventure. I've never done that before, but I'm sure it will work. Hopefully...

Postwork? - I'm sure I don't know about a "flare-button" in TG  :D

And good luck with the sound  :)

Yes, postwork. I thought looking into the sun without any lens flare would look unnatural.

Well, the sound... Actually I don't even know yet which software I'm going to use. But as I said, I'm quite confident.

Still not yet in the void although the visual stuff is completed.
I created a movie out of the (7450) frames and loaded it into a video editing program. Adding sound now. The intro music fits perfectly. And it's great fun to do some Foley stuff

Here it is: the final movie.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rm2rifyq1nex1z6/SW%20Who%27s%20your%20daddy.mp4?dl=0
Be aware that this is a 116MB BigMac! I already compressed it. The original has 200MB (Resolution 800 X 450px). I didn't want to set it on YouTube or Vimeo, because the quality there is not very good.
You can watch it directly in Dropbox as far as I can see, but I recommend downloading the film. Dropbox seems to compress it even more  :(

It's complete nonsense as I already mentioned, but it was great fun to do. Adding sound was a fantastic experience. It breathes much more life into the movie.
"Daddy's home" is some sort of a working title. I decided to name it "Who's your daddy?"
Credits are at the end of the clip.

Hope you like it.

Watched it at work, without sound :)

Really fun to watch and nice mocking around with the Star Wars universe ;D

Was this all rendered in TG?
Did you render it all yourself?

Cheers,
Martin

Wow, thank you all!!!
Martin, yes, I rendered it all myself.
There are only very few things that were done in After Effects. The Star Wars crawl at the beginning for example. Sure, it could have been done in TG, of course, but that would have been render overkill. The image I used for the 20th Century Fox (sort of... :))) opener was rendered in TG, but the light beams weren't. So I'd say except the opening there's 99% TG.

Once again thank you for your comments. You make me feel real good!!  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

But!  I'll have to add a small modification. In the credits I forgot to mention Olaf "Olo" Zwätz who made this great VW-Beetle model and gave me permission to use it. This is no big deal, but I'll have to upload the modified movie again. If my original posting will be still "editable" I'll update the link. Otherwise I'll write a new one.

Hallo Hannes,

ich muß einfach noch mal ganz persönlich zu dem kleinen Meisterwerk gratulieren (in einer Sprache, in der ich wirklich vorwiegend verstehe was ich schreibe ;)

Eine kleine Anerkennung:
[attachimg=1]

I answered you in an e-mail.

Enjoyable. Though I was expecting a feature length movie after your build-up (just kidding). Close up DV with the reflections on the helmet is pretty cool. The ship coming up over the camera as well of course. Nice sound editing too.

And I do have a script, but no movie yet... :)

but if i combined TG with iclone i think i can make a long HD  video (my be 1 hour or more)

I think that you can do something about that can't you? Premium or something?

Anyway, you should get it out there, man! Kinda cool to do all that work just for you and us. But the internets won't look kindly on the hoarding when they find out ;D

Besides, I really do want to see how many views it can get between the time that you post it, and say one year from now.

But there's another thing that kept me from putting it on Youtube or other video host sites. I don't know how this little movie would work for someone, who doesn't know anything about TG or CG at all. Would it still be funny?
