This is a pretty good free 3D Fractal program -- I've been playing with it for a while and it's still in development.
http://sites.google.com/site/mandelbulber/home
Take a look at the "Images and Animations", especially the last three animations in full screen.
Here is my first image (the mushrooms and frame were a Photoshop addition.)
Last time I downloaded this there was a trojan attached. It's intriguing though. Just downloaded it and will try it out if AVG says okay.
It should be okay and it has an installer and 64bit version now. I use avast! and didn't have any problems.
looks cool, love the mushies!
pity it does not run on the mac... :(
I did a render last night. I like this better than Incendia. I'll be posting it to my Flickr page later.
I have actualy looked for program like this quite a few times, I'm glad somebody finaly develouped one. ;D
Thanks , Jaf!
How are the render times?
I find the render times to be good. png does not save properly. I think jpeg is the best option.
Follow the link Inky. It lists a mac version on the download page. It says Windows and Linux, but if you click through the first file listed is: mandelbulber-mac-1.07.zip. - Bill .

It's really not too bad (compared with our Terragen2 renders!) I found that turning off the "Screen space ambient occlusion" [edit -- it's in the Post effects tab] until the final render will help. Also, you may wish to change the default horizontal and/or vertical lighting (relative to camera) to see more detail (again, until you start final rendering with shadows.)
I'm not affiliated in any way with this program -- just found it one day searching for fractal software. I was a big fan of Fractint way back in the mid 90's when it was a DOS command line program. :o
Thanks Jaf and Njeneb !

I'm rather proud of this one. :D
One the fractals tab. If you click on the HQ button, the program will calculate the best DE. The more zeros behind the decimal point the longer the render.
I have found that a 20hr render still has very good quality but render faster by increasing the DE. Usually an hour render will look the same as a fifteen hour render.
I see there's a new update at the Mandelbulber site: http://sites.google.com/site/mandelbulber/
Some interesting changes and additions.
Ok appearently I am missing somethning obvious,
as I am not seeing any new stuff. ???
The interface has been altered quite a bit. Also the image quality is better. His jpeg exporter is still a bit odd. I have to run them through Corel Paint to get Windows to recognize them.

I may have missed it on the last version, but this one has some primitives and planes (water.) I noticed the tabs have changed some -- can't remember if "Engine" was separate before or not.
I'm still pretty new using this software, so I don't have a good "feeling" about what's new or not.
some of my recent excursions with mandelbulber on my mac:

hours of fun...
:)
Nice! Is that first image a "war wagon" assembly line? :D
Nice indeed. 8)
How about the render times?
cheers...pretty quick for these ones...from 5 mins upto half an hour maybe?
fairly new at this prog so still learning...I have hit render and the timer is off the scale(like several days at least)!!!just hit stop and undo.... :D
so I know not to change that (last) parameter too much!!
for me normal renders with mandelbulber were pretty quick on my new system, gotta use that program more...
just started using Mandelbulb again

i plan on doing a lot more of these.
Kinda reminds me of barnicles... ;)
upgraded Mandelbulber 3D & also started using Mandelbulb 3D, at first i though they were the same programs due to some confusion on the fractal forums
high resolution render with Mandelbulb 3D-

Yes, very confusing!
Also, if you want to find out which version of Mandelbulb 3D (not Mandelbulber) you need to click on the "Internal" tab, just below "Stereo".
Then there's Incendia EX IV.

Nice image :)
Mandelbulb 3D seems better imo, but i was used to Mandelbulbers tweaking tools, and i liked the renders i created with it, so i feel strange / nostalgic when using mandelbulb 3D.
-mandelbulb 3D has a useful realtime 3d navigation window which quite helpful
-you can combine multiple formulas in mandelbulb 3D
-animation seems easier
-seems a little faster at rendering too
the only thing mandelbulb 3D lacks in a 64bit version, though i haven't ran into any memory issues yet though.
Go to the Sourceforge Mandelbulb page. There is a 64 bit version with Windows Installer there.
thanks henry, i will look for that

i decided to do an animation with Mandelbulb 3D, should be ready later this afternoon.
henry: were you thinking of Mandelbulber? i already have the 64bit version of Mandelbulber
i couldnt find Mandelbulber 3D on sourceforge or a 64bit version.
the only place i have found Mandelbulb 3D was on the fractal forums.
2 different apps...Mandelbulb 3d, and Mandelbulber (http://www.mandelbulber.com/)
:)
When I download Mandelbulb 3d, I get a dialer.
dialer?
what was the url you got the download from?
