Entry title: Horizon Chasers
Universe: Horizon (my own)
Story: Have they just arrived, or are they just leaving? Who is the guest, who is the host? One thing is clear: everybody wants to be there. Almost.
Software used:
scene assembly / prop modeling: Blender 2.90a
sculpting: Blender / ZBrush [optionally]
rendering: Blender Cycles
clouds models: Terragen Linux
terrains BG: Terragen
environment HDRI texture: Terragen
terrains FG/MG: Gaea
texture painting: Affinity Photo / Substance Painter
color correction: Affinity Photo / DaVinci Resolve
posed humans: MakeHuman
photogrammetry: MeshRoom (1 asset - tree) [optionally; not sure at this point if will include it]
Hardware:
i9-9900K, 64GB RAM, RTX 2070 (all inside a laptop!)
All models are/will be created by me alone, same goes for textures. The exception are posed humans generated with MakeHuman.
Initially I wanted to render the piece either in Terragen + Blender (FG + PBR models Blender; MG/BG terrains in Terragen; aerial perspective from Terragen), but since holdouts are not allowed and time is short, I decided for Blender Cycles.
I will follow up this thread with WIP renders and wireframes of models/scene setup.
Thank you for your time.
Hi,
first batch of WIPs incoming... thanks for feedback!
Props...
Hi,
alien alphabet:
The rightmost model has a striking resemblance to the Khar-Toba ship from the Homeworld series. In shape at least, if not the details. Brings many good memories.
Looks like you put a lot of effort and background story to your entry, which is nice. Keep it up and good luck!

Thanks for feedback! I have heard a lot of good things about the Homeworld series, will check it out of curiosity. The rightmost model is actually a building (if we mean the same model; soon initial renders). I did as little work on these models as possible since they will be mostly small on the screen. Train-like ship will be larger, hence a lot of work there on the details.
WIPs attack continues...
Terrains (FG):
Terragen scene used as reflection map:
I mean this one. :D

Oh this one. Definitely a ship ;) I draw inspiration from old trains - my kid has a book with lots of trains and cars and we play in finding the items from cover inside :)
Great models and shading. You are putting a lot of thought and effort into this. Looking forward to seeing where you take it.
Thanks, doing my best within limited time ;) !
Terragen scene used as HDRI map:
That's a really nice HDRI. Good balance between lighting and clouds.
You could even add some faint suns here and there. Depends on how sci-fi you wish to make it. ;)
Thanks!
Oh it will be SF quite a bit, I have bunch of renders, soon one closer to final.

Raw preview render...
Wow this looks so much like a painting! Well done, really curious to see the final result!
Thanks!
It will look very similar, only added mist pass, really subtle DOF and desaturation of those fire pits.
Best!
I like it!
Very nice! Interesting scene.
Like a painting. This is a type of image and processing that we rarely see with Terragen. Good luck!
Thank you for kinds words! Good luck to other contestants! There is a lot of things I would like to still improve here, but the deadline is almost there. You can see the completed piece attached (subtle DOF, aearial perspective, color correction).
When I find time, I will expand on the piece, render it with 2x higher resolution (the scene is heavy: there are people and things on ground that you can't see at this resolution), and make an alternative version with different environment.
Best!

This is a wonderful project that I assume could be a collection for a great story board. Your imagination is one for the story tellers for sure! Good Luck!!! :)
Now, this is unusual! Great image! Good luck!
Came out really good. Khar-Tobas are nice additions. :P
