These rock formations are made from the inverted crater displacement, add to terrain. As you can tell, even with compute normal, my lateral displace is way off. I had fun trying.
Well, you certainly get some nice formation. If you do this less exagerated (more natural), and add some more fractal warp (try different settings) or other displacements and cracks, it might be interesting.
Agreed and you might want to add a slight hint of procedural erosion for good measure with some rock talus here and there. Keep at it.
Agree with the previous comments, quite impressive formations...keep on tweakin'
With some new trials...crazy
I've had a little fun over the last couple of days with your inverted crater idea
It's a fun method. Needs refinement, but the ideas are certainly there.
Ah yes...very good!!
I broke off of this post and did this one awhile back...love this program!

I shall have to try a rim shader I guess...
more fun!
I definitely employed the rim shader in all of the above. You can get really freaky with it and redirects after a Compute Terrain node.
And then I read about planetary displacement tolerance. Thanks! :)
Good to know!

Inky was doing some similar bloated displacements like this a few years back, h=these look very good man !
Here are a couple more....
I was really tempted to put big spheres for eyes on #5, ha!
The third one is a cube, not a tower...
