Title: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on March 12, 2016, 05:39:43 AM
A little teaser of my entry. I still have to change some settings, but already encountered this GISD problem again; the grid in this tank. If anyone knows of another way to rid of this, please tell me. I really don't want to not use GISD.

That's so true! GISD has still some bad side effects. Also in combination with DOF.

Ulco, what about increasing the detail of your object in another app?. The problem won't go away most likely, but maybe it's less prominent?

Btw, looks cool!!! ;)

I already doubled the polycount, and actually you won't get this close to the tanks, but I could try and see what happens. I can always do a very local no-GISD crop render and paste in PS.

It is really cool... just wait  ;D

Nice scene.
Does using a different render method just in that object node itself look bad Ulco?
Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Oshyan on March 12, 2016, 04:27:54 PM
I seem to recall such GISD object rendering issues are a problem with the object itself, lacking normals perhaps, not being smooth shaded? Are you wanting it to be smooth shaded?

Yes, it should be smooth. I'll check the object again. Thanks.

I was trying to get a decent view, but I don't know if I will enter these. Not satisfied. Perhaps I can conjure up something else yet. But I didn't want to dump them without posting.
Title: Re: RoundTrip

Some more tests. The problem with this setup is that I want to show some height (vertigo effect), but also keep the view over the river down there and the path, which is hard. I'll think of something else.
Title: Re: RoundTrip

This was the first of this series, but the veggies hide everything, which I don't like.

Nice views Ulco.

"The problem with this setup is that I want to show some height (vertigo effect),
but also keep the view over the river down there and the path, which is hard."

It is interesting when you begin to think in a different way for this VR approach.
A standard image looks kind of easy after trying to make the image work for 360 degree. Up and down included.
I have the same problem right now. Wish we had-should have at least 1 month more for this challenge.
Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on March 25, 2016, 09:35:03 AM
Yes, standard is much easier, so it seems. You now also have areas that have flat light or the opposite, which is harder when veggies are involved also. But I got a nice one running now; opened up the valley, changed the strata, etc. And another setup running with snow. I wish one of the prizes were a real headset; I don't think my wife will allow me to purchase one  :P

I have a new fantasy of an occulus rift grant from the Canada Council Arts Grants as a way of getting VR out there. It's possible to get the CC to underwrite the purchase of maybe a dozen or more headsets....I could become a VR educator and supplement my pension giving work shops....there's also a fairly large 3D community that I'm aware of here already and I see customers there as well as schools. Hmmmm.

Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on March 26, 2016, 12:54:54 PM
I'm starting to like this, so I got another setup. Perhaps not for the contest, as there are still some issues. Like the flattish stones and the fake grass, and the dullness of view 1. The white spots are easily taken out.

The last one of the 'Valley Path' (10nov14) and the last 'Winter Stroll' are the ones that caught my eye the most. As always your work and your mastery of TG is a pleasure to behold. The visualization of the VR environment is certainly a tricky task, and not having a proper viewer is a true handicap. I think, to echo a few comments here, that the shortness of the contest is a bit unfortunate as many folks are just grasping how best to construct scenes that display TG's capabilities in a VR format. Excellent scenes Ulco! Looking forward to the final entries!

Echo zaxxon re: contest length as I'm just hitting the understand spawning inspiration stage but PS needs our input to help sell TG so I'm good with that...I may still upload a 3rd scene as I'm at it again....LOL

The most of us do not have your ability to work as quickly and as well as you Ulco. On my pictures I'm still working on it. If I delay the show is that on the same stage I have a lot of vegetation and changing room camera I always corrections that add and add and add corrections . A successful 360 degree for me is much difficult to achieve than a traditional image. It must be said that the delays that this competition will be much shorter than the others we had on terragen. It is not obvious to perform a clean image VR. I guess this is the case for all of us and that we lack experience.

Adding vegetation in your latest images brings a lot to this place. The character at the top of the cliff is a plus too.   :)

How do you make your grass areas? is it shaders, or objects, or a mix?

The artist who terrifies me with his talent though is Richard(the massive scene)Frazer...his stuff is scary good. I'd like to see his vortex cloud animation scene as a VR walkabout myself.
I'm personally grateful for this comp as it's the first where I've had the full program and am learning by leaps and bounds these days.
Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on March 29, 2016, 02:26:20 AM
Thanks guys. The grass is a mix of 2 grasses, one built in ZBrush (you all have it, as it's on NWDA for sharing), the other is the grass clump. I deliberately didn't use any ST stuff ( :(), but only XFrog. The grass clump takes the colors (grass colors and flower dots) from the terrain through a transform shader into the default color tab (set at 1.5 or 2), something I've explained earlier. Works quite well for non-close-up.
Good that the deadline is extended; I wasn't very satisfied about the ruined building and ivy, so I can rebuild that. And the rocks along the path can be better.

The invisible man is a bit of a joke, this series is full of little jokes. Actually I would have liked the viewer to see himself down his body if looking down, but that can't be done; if you turn around you look yourself into the eyes (what a shock).

Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on April 07, 2016, 02:55:01 AM
It's based on a story I started to write when I was young (16 or so) about a double world, where a guy in a desert constantly wondered what those things were that stuck out of the ground. Until he discovered a way to get through to the world below. Turned out he and his people lived on a giant roof, made to protect the world against some hazard from outside (sun nearing its final stages or so).

That's just a hole in the grounhd with light in it  ;)

Very impressive again your pictures. I especially like in the recent 3 (RabbitHole.0003e.jpg). This picture allows us to admire a gigantic territory. I like this character again with the yellow jersey the top of its rocks. In another picture, there's this strange contrast between the body (tortured slave?) without face and lily flower often associated with tranquility.
Title: Re: RoundTrip
Post by: Dune on April 13, 2016, 02:22:21 AM
Thanks guys. The dead guy was an afterthought, emphasizing the 'derelictness' of the mine/quarry. I made it for a medieval torture wheel, and just got it to fit on this crane. He has a head, but it's not working anymore and sagged, so you see his palate. Maybe not a slave, but the diector of the mine  :P (digging for fools gold for wasted ages). His house down the road is derelict too, and he was hoping for some extra income by adding the advertisment to his wall. Nobody passed by until now. How sad.
