Post by: Costaud on March 10, 2007, 12:13:09 AM
Here a link to flowers and some plants (and fish) in 3ds format all free.  http://toucan.web.infoseek.co.jp/3DCG/3ds/FlowerModelsE.html

If someone could convert those to a Terragen (or at least Blender) readable format, that would be great.

old blaggard, open Blender go to File>Import>3D Studio (.3ds)>the File browser appear>click the two white dots at the top of the list to browse to your 3ds object>click on your 3ds object to select it>click ENTER twice and presto the 3ds object is displayed in the 3D window, now for the export to obj format, first select all parts of the 3ds object go to File>Export>Wavefront (.obj)>the File browser appear>in the text file next to the two grey triangles write the name of your newly created obj object and don't forget to add the file extension .obj (THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT)>click on the two white dots at the top of the list to browse to the file in which you wish to save your obj object>ckick on that file and click ENTER twice (you could also click ENTER once and the export window will appear)> if you have some image textures it's important to place them with the obj file, so hope you understand my bad english.

Here is a flower I have converted with Blender http://www.designpaths.com/forums/attachments.php?attachmentid=26&sid=

Interesting... the version of Blender that I've got doesn't support .3ds import.  I guess it's high time to upgrade ;).

Yes it's time to upgrade to version 2.43 and you'll see a lot of improvements beside 3ds export/import.  ;)

Toucan's work is very good. You can find the same flowers with more recognizable English names at http://www.lfgrafix.com/grafix/Meshmodels/MeshPlantsToucan.html
High res models are for sale at TurboSquid (sorry for the long url) http://www.turbosquid.com/HTMLClient/Search/Index.cfm?FuseAction=ProcessSearch&istSearchKey=toucan&intMediaType=-1&stgBoolean=l&blExternal=FALSE

They are easy to convert with Wings 3D: just import and export as OBJ.
The insects are not usable in Terragen, as they have more than 16 textures.
The fish will have to wait for transparent water ...

Thanks Helen I completely forget Wings3d and Wings is more easier to use than Blender, I use Blender because I made some tweaking to the surfaces (textures). Thanks for the "english" link.  :D

Insects work with Terragen I use Blender to convert it to an obj and all the textures are right on the spot.

They are? Then I am doing something wrong - must investigate this, thanks.

I would be eternally gratefull if you guys wouldn't mind posting the reformatted images here as .obj.  I don't really want to download yet another piece of software to do this and I think my brain would seize up!!!  Be great if you could but if you don't want to - I understand .....

Well, to post actual models as OBJs (which would mean redistributing them), the author's permission would be needed and I don't think anyone has got that, so the next best thing is to suggest easy ways to convert them for use with Terragen.
In order to use models from the internet a 3D program is needed and, for well formed models like these, using Wings3D is a piece of cake: import 3DS-export OBJ.

I am using Blender to convert these models:
1. Load Blender
2. Clear the default object by Shift X
3. File /import/3ds
4. select the import directory
5. File/export/obj
6. select the object directory.

The object can the be loaded in tgtp ok, but in som cases the object is up to down, (e.g HoteiAoi) and in other cases
the object is placed in in the wrong translation y position.
How to do?

I'm partial to MilkShape for low-budget modeling. Take a look at www.milkshape3d.com. It's a snap to change orientation, import 3ds and convert to .obj, etc.
