Title: Delorean DMC-12
Post by: ajcgi on July 14, 2017, 01:07:44 PM
Good evening everyone! (Well it's evening here!)
This is the Delorean DMC-12 model I've been setting up, from the WIP over at
http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,23357.0.html (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,23357.0.html)
(New render of that running as I type)

A couple of views are attached to this post. The zip contains an example scene with things already set up, plus an obj of the model itself and a tgc of shaders! Feel free to tweak away and post any updates if you like. Consider this open source. :D  8)

The Delorean had a brushed metal bodywork finish, something that was pretty unique. Unfortunately, replicating that entirely involves a true anisotropic shader and most importantly for Terragen, decent soft reflections that don't freak out. Soft highlights are easy peasy. One day we'll get decent soft reflections across buckets. Feel free to prove me wrong. I'd love to see this thing looking even better.

Guess I'm the first to say a huge thank you; I've wanted a good straight one for a long time and it's even better knowing the builder.

No problem, Bobby!  I have really enjoyed putting this one together. I thought this old file of mine was a really high detail pain the arse, but it turns out that V4 of Softimage that I made it in was just bad. Having loaded it in to the final version released by Autodesk before canning it *plays last post on a bugle*, it turned out to be pretty spiffy and ready for a little conversion. Not much interior to speak of, so the doors aren't openable as yet.
I know what you mean though. A straight forward version of this is actually quite hard to find. The first time I ever saw one was on Back to The Future. It confused me when a few years later I saw a normal one being driven about town! Such a terrible combination of constituent parts, but a classic nonetheless I'd say!

Thanks for sharing. Looks nice.

There are some very small polygons with more then 4 vertices that Terragen (still?) doesn't like i think.
But they are so small and could be only seen from very close range.
Not that i am complaining, because they work without a problem in other software so far i know. :)

Yes, thanks for sharing. I don't do much with cars, but it might come in handy one day.

Thank you very much!
Since you use(d) Softimage - as I do as well - would it be possible to share your scene file, perhaps?
If it`s not too much to ask. I never modeled a car myself so that would be a nice learning experience.
Cheers, Klaus

@kadri. Thanks for pointing that out. It's an old file. I try to avoid those N-gons these days. I may well do a new revision of it in the coming weeks. [edit] There's a bonkers amount of them it turns out. Seems I used to be very liberal with my n-gons.

@dune @hannes No probs!

@KlausK That's a fair point! I didn't think of sharing the Soft scene. Sure thing. I'll put a file together shortly and stick it on Dropbox.

Ok so for Klaus and anybody else who wants a totally random Delorean scene made years back, here we are!
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7177358/TerragenForum/DeloreanXSI_V02.zip

Some of it is rough around the edges. This was from waaaaay back, very early on in my 3d days. :D
I did actually change a few things to make it work in TG. I kept swearing at my younger self for making things badly.
For example, it still isn't correctly unwrapped in a way that would make sense in production. The metal panels all share the same texture and material. If and when I get round to revisiting this, I'd like to optimise things correctly, sort out the UV flow and then unwrap it properly so it can be painted up in something like Substance.
