Title: Untouched Land
Post by: sjefen on October 20, 2018, 06:58:22 PM
Hi,

Just testing out Path Tracing.
Also looking for a good grass clump. If anyone know where
I could get one, please let me know  ;)

Nice color scheme and scene as a whole. I like it very much.

Mr. Lamppost has released grasses a long time ago, Walli has too, and I have some (free) at NWDA. Searching the forum may help you find them.

I find Ulco's (Dune) single grasses to be incredibly versatile, but due take awhile to populate. His clumps are very nice as well.

The grass you have in this project looks rather nice, very soft and "rolling". The ground texture in the right with the grass particularly draws my attention. It's nice.

The problem with this grass clump, is that it consist of maybe 3 single grass strands.
I have to make billions of instances  :'(

Have you tried Dune's free grasses at NWDA?

I've reworked the scene a little.

Changed the lighting, changed distribution on some of the vegetation and added some more.
Hope you like it.

I prefer the first iteration. Trees take up too much attention now, spoiling the serene mood.

You can also use the internal grass for a bit more distant than close-up. Decrease width of the stems (object x and Z at 50%), and if very slopey terrain, decrease patch from 10m to maybe 5, and use rotation, after a final compute normal between last node and pop.

Seems that I have a bit different taste: I prefer the new version.
What bothers me a little are the big rocks. They look too smooth and streched.

What I fell in love with at first sight were the snowy peaks at the horizon.

Perhaps the view could be also more interesting for Ulco if you add a kind of inconspicuous but visible story in the middle where the grass appears pure and naked?

WOW! This is fantastic! Love the update, I mean, I can literally see Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey marching out of the woods on their quest to return her in a new updated remake. Lol

Yeah, that's what the lighting and scene reminded me of. I hope that's not an insult. :O

Certainly better in several ways. The sky/clouds are excellent, and the new more broken up grass is better too. I do find that distant rock doesn't hold up to the improved lighting though. I think it's a scan/photogrammetry, right? Or at least a photo texture?

It's a rock object, but yes, it has a photo as texture.
I have changed it. Update is coming  ;)

Perhaps some low level surface detail to breakup the smoothing of both the texture and displacement may make it blend more with the environment.

Post by: Oshyan on October 25, 2018, 03:06:41 PM
Oh my, yes. I think you may have achieved that magical balance of the various previous versions. A nice subtly lit foreground with more to discover for the eye if attention is paid, that lovely lit-up mountain in the background, and an honestly just pure photo-realistic sky. I love it! (copied from Facebook :D )

Title: Re: Untouched Land
Post by: WAS on October 25, 2018, 03:26:45 PM
This is a nice update everything is coming together. I love the addition of the little pond/stream.

Though I have one concern, why are those bushes internal shadows so soft compared to the scene? I feel they should have richer internal shadowing, especially with PT. Perhaps the opacity has been adjusted a little too much?

I also agree with Oshyan about the sky. While simplistic, it's superbly realistic, especially for the evening/morning setting you're capturing. Well done.
Title: Re: Untouched Land
Post by: sjefen on October 25, 2018, 04:32:53 PM
Thanks guys  :)

I agree about those bushes. I'll have a look to see if there is something I can do, but right now my computer is gonna be busy for a long time. I'm trying to render this scene 7000 pixels in with for potential print.
This is also the first scene I've done to really try and test my new pc that I bought this summer.

Title: Re: Untouched Land
Post by: sjefen on October 25, 2018, 04:53:45 PM
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Prosessor

Gainward GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (not the best, but I had to save money somewhere)

Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 16GB X 2 (also not the best, but it was starting to hurt my bank account)

Guess the other stuff isn't that important, or?

So many nice comments and also thanks to all that gave me some very constructive feedback.

I'm not completely finished with this scene. I have something more I wanna add and something I wanna improve, but I hope you guys will continue to give awesome feedback so I can improve on my skills.

The community here is so bloody awesome!

There is no overall poly count indicator, but if you run tgdcli.exe instead of tgd.exe (in the Terragen application folder) you'll get a window that shows a running log of everything Terragen is doing. When you do a render you should see a line of poly count for each object or population. You'd have to add them up manually. And then there's the micropoly indicator on the render window, which only applies to the terrain when Ray Trace Objects is enabled (as it should be).

Title: Re: Untouched Land
Post by: sjefen on October 26, 2018, 02:49:52 PM
Alright. Would be cool to have a poly count in the future  :)

Anyway. Had a problem with a render. I don't know when it happened, but when I
looked at the screen it was telling me it had been running for almost 21 hours, but I noticed
the rendering was continuing and decided to let it be and see what it did.

When I came back from work today it was at about 35 hours and I could hear that my computer
wasn't doing anything anymore, but the timer told me it was still rendering. I noticed an error in the
image (the one that I've marked) and I'm pretty sure this would have kept rendering forever.

When I tried to stop the render it crashed  :'(

Hmm, strange. Let us know if it happens again. Did you make any changes to the scene that you think would have affected that part of it and made it different from past renders of the scene?

- Oshyan
Title: Re: Untouched Land

No changes on that part of the scene.
But I'm trying again. I'll let you know if the same thing happens and if it's at the same place
Title: Re: Untouched Land
Post by: sjefen on October 28, 2018, 09:50:09 AM
Well, it worked now. Rendered in 7000 X 3500 in just over 19H
I don't think that's to bad. This scene has a lot of stuff in it.

Anyway.... I think I'm done with this one. The colors are a little bit different, but I hope it's alright.
Let me know if not.

I think this is the final version.

Added another cloud layer and also some fog on the ground and between the trees.

It's also been brightened a little bit cause I was doing a print test and that was
way to dark in the shadows. Almost all the details in the shadows where lost.
