Title: Internet is a hellhole... well, FB groups at least...
Post by: N-drju on April 06, 2018, 03:51:34 PM
So I signed up for that Facebook page where people can post invitations and announcements for bike rides together. You state the itinerary, date, pace and go for some cycling with random people.

I followed this group for a few months now, but only today have actually made my own post - inviting people to make a few laps around the park and then, a stadium. You wouldn't believe what kind of stupid comments I received for my first post ever to that group! ???

One lass asked if I'm a hamster or a mouse to make circuits like that... I answered her very gently that if she's really curious she can come and see which of the two I resemble or, if not, to just piss off (not the actual wording). She told me she never even wanted to come in the first place. I promptly answered that maybe it's for the best and wished her good weekend.

Since the projected date for a ride I suggested was 19th April, another smart-ass, asked me in disbelief if I really want to tell him that I am not going to cycle for almost two weeks? :o :o

Excuse me... but is bicycle the beginning and end of all thing?

Can't I just be busy?

Or maybe I always have to cycle with them?

Really, if you don't like the idea why won't you just keep silent instead of being ironic / rude! ::) This was my first post to that group. First f@$& post ever. No-one thanked me. No-one said "hey, I'll keep you in my brain, maybe I'll join." Just stupidity and classic net hate.

Let me tell you... I need help coming to terms with my today's attempt at being sociable.  ??? :( Sometimes I can't believe how sarcastic and unkind people can be towards someone whom they don't know. I am not sad. Rather uncomfortable, disenchanted and kind of disbelieving that anyone can be like that.

Just don't use FB, I don't like it at all personally. Too much crap going on there.

Well, actually me neither you see. But I am an idealist at heart and thought I'll put it to some good use. And got punished.

I recognize the idealist part. Well, it's a punishment in words. I lately heard of stories of physical punishments after meetings through whatever FB or other group, and it reminds me of a short movie that had some people in a room, who were chatting to eachother. You could read what they said, and see who said what. None of them was what he/she pretended, so your cycling meeting may have ended up with a bunch of motorcycle gang members  8) :P

Aside from the unintended consequences of casual social events planned on FB, there are  serious issues arising from the acknowledged data mining for profit business model of many social media sites. We live in a surveillance culture where governments follow our most trivial activities and create data bases around our behavior. Witness China's plans for tallying "citizenship points" to determine who receives social benefits and who is denied them (this includes access to public transportation among other things). We know from the original FB developers that they knowingly exploited addictive behavior models to entice and retain users with the intent of making money off of their 'voluntary' surrendering of personal information. Social Media can create a "Mob" mentality, and issues can be manipulated to condemn or praise a given person or topic without any substantive factual basis. The cesspit of vile discourse present on Social Media is part of our human nature, but  amplified and given a mass audience. Even Planetside's business model embraces  FB, and I can't blame them. Google and Youtube glean your information in similar fashion and can be used to create individual and group profiles, but sadly I seem to keep using them. Where this is going is beyond me, but I doubt I'm going to enjoy this Brave New World.

Do not forget our own (mine anyway) democracy who assigned us numbers to provide us with a retirement fund, our military identities, credit agencies who can tell you more than you want to know about yourself,,,
I do not know if we lost privacy with the electric lighting systems or the telephone....hehe...maybe the census....hang in there! You could drive yourself nuts...

Facebook does have its own problems but the rude people who use it are another issue. As with many things on the Internet, it connects you to run-of-the-mill people on the streets and you will find the full gamut of good to bad and everywhere in between. I think those on Facebook are usually weighted toward the bad. I realized as I got older that I wasn't very well socialized as a kid because I didn't do very well against the bullies on the playground. That's probably what drove me toward skills that didn't require a lot of interaction with humans. So now I find myself with a lot of skills that other people don't have because they required a lot of social interaction. So being like I am has a lot of advantages. The best thing about the Internet is that you can use it to find people who you will benefit from and who can benefit from you. However, those like-minded people are often too far away to do things together geographically. So I am sure you can find someone who is just who you are looking for but riding their bike from Adelaide to a park near you just isn't going to happen because of the distances involved. I hated high school because of the students that didn't want to be there and I loved college because they were gone. So the stupid people who chant "a college education for every child" are full of crap. My country has a shortage of skilled labor because too many of the people went off to college and a lot of those "educated" people ended up being parasites on the people who do the real work to provide what most of us need or are willing to pay for.

@ PabloMack

Thanks for these words Buddy. :) You can't even imagine how much I can relate to your words!

I am also an introvert at heart and have always been such. Only recently however, I began to actually embrace and understand it as I should instead of treating this as a flaw of some sort. Like I said to Ulco, I am also an idealist at heart who received an up-bring based on some simple but important life values. Therefore, childish behavior, sarcasm, irony and cynicism impact me more than others because I can clearly see what is amiss. Sometimes however, I can hardly control myself not to lash out at someone who behaves like jerk. I can be an adorable and kind person. But I can also become someone's living nightmare if they deserve it... It's just that it is not always worth it to actually hand out justice.

I know exactly what you mean by the HS - College dilemma. In my case there were also many people whom I barely tolerated at HS and they barely tolerated me. I wasn't popular back then. In college, I realized that this is no longer the case. Socialwise, it was like a fresh start for me. I could almost physically feel the difference and comfort of being a part of brand new community. I think it is important to just pursue what you like and love and keep an eye out for people to whom you can talk to and feel understood by.

Last but not least, my country is in the same, exact situation - everyone goes to college, so there are not many people who want to become builders, plumbers or carpenters. But if they do, they are paid better than all those white-collar "elites". :D Who do not always deserve "elite" status, mind you!

@ zaxxon

I know what you mean by the Internet era dangers. As far as the mob mentality is concerned, I think that some web pages and news outlets purposefully find stories, no matter how small or irrelevant they are, that entice some sort of controversy. Racial relations, gun control, left side politics, right side politics and so on. It's like a button for mass anxiety. And some people fall for that...

I once heard a very smart sentence that reads - "We read half of the news, understand a quarter but react twice as much". :D Enough said...

I never really used FB and other social media too much. I never had and will not have a Twitter or Instagram accounts and I probably have to delete those on FB and Youtube... Enough is enough. The less of them you use, the healthier and more serene you are...

And that certainly counts. Though too much time on the computer, no matter what goal you have, can also ruin your life and later you regret the days gone by.

But you know what? I have also set up another event with another community that I entered a year ago. The response is completely different. Maybe it's because the average age in said community is higher, I don't know. People are strange.

Oh my you wanna see the hatred and venom in the vintage Star wars collecting community, makes your regular trash talk pale into a puff of nothing.

You've got a bunch that hate anything modern, a group that hate 5 points of articulation, a VERY VOCAL group that will very publicly shun you if you have anything reproduction, and they all think they're they arbiter of what anyone else can do with their own stuff.

There have always been arrogant small minded idiots they're just punched far less often on the internet.

The internet is a wonderful communication tool, but it does provide an insulated platform for idiots to spout balls. Which they've always done, just previously to their mother's basement.

Guess artists and creative people a bit different... :)

I told someone lately that I got no FB, no twiter or whatever else is out there similar and he was looking like me I am from Mars or something. Hehe... he also asked me how on Earth I can survive like this... :D I said pretty good, pretty good...Then he asked me why do I have this old (6 years) smart phone? I said it works perfectly so why would I buy another one? He give me the "this guys is f..." look. :D

Sometimes I wish to have a big global power outage for a week just to see how this new generation would paralize coz they can twitter anymore. Some probably would really die...

Attila, I agree with you big time - people with an artistic soul usually are kinder, more sensitive and careful with their words and actions. A fact. You are absolutely right. We should embrace it and never fell ashamed of ourselves. Though sometimes I do have a trouble with that... :( But I keep developing a thicker skin though. ;)

Ulco, this is why I shared this story with you guys in the first place. I know you can always provide a kind advice or insightful comments - free of charge big smile included.

Meanwhile, my "lost cause" Facebook group adventure continues with another jerk asking "what's so special about 19th April and a track around the stadium". He even included a map with a distance measurment.

This time I snapped... told him that there doesn't have to be anything special in a place or date to actually go biking with someone and that he simply doesn't have to come. I also thanked him for including that measurement map, because a derp like me would have never managed to use a measurement tool on his own... :P

Fun fact - his next reply came after two minutes, while I was writing this post. A testament to the fact these haters actually spent most of their time doing nothing but being online...

Unfortunately, I don't think it actually changes them. But sometimes it's just that first thing that comes to your mind... Maybe at least some of them will come to their senses...

Regarding your Star Wars collectible post - you may avoid an individual in the future. But when you get a whole group of haters on you... Damn, that's carnage plain and simple!

My only advise is that concentrate on the bright side of life and on put all these "interesting" people aside. They have only one purpose is to spread negativity and if u give them attention you just make them win. I believe that the majority of people are still good out there.  ;)

You know guys, I always admire Grand Theft Auto creator's inventiveness when it comes to parodying certain aspects of life...

To those of you who don't know - in GTA V, there is a fictional social platform named "Bleeter" and here's it's introductory message:

"Information isn't about imparting knowledge anymore. The Internet changed all that.

Welcome to world of self aggrandizing shorthand. Keep strangers and people you hated in high school up to speed with every mundane detail of your life 24/7. Welcome to the delusion of having interesting life and friends.

Bleeter is the perfect strom of blogging, social networking and messaging. We're demolishing 100000 years of complex linguistic development 140 characters at a time."

Hi N-drju
I had social problems when I was a child, but i learned from that, and i never had them in social medias, or my own daily environment again
i guess all depends of learn about with what kind of people you must relate. so, knowing that, Fb its ok for me...
hope this not become myself in a strange guy here :D

It's not strange if you feel okay with that. To each according to his own as they say.

But I also don't think that social media or real world impact is our "fault" or success in any way. It's the people therein who might be good or bad and we cannot influence the way they behave. At least not as much as we would like to.
