Title: latest TG4 release giving my Win 8.1 memory allocaation problems
Post by: Shield Wulf on December 28, 2018, 06:31:57 PM
Hi All,

latest TG4 release giving my Win 8.1 memory allocation problems when it's sitting there not doing anything with the application. I did not experience this problem before I upgraded to the latest version of TG4. I have run TG3 and TG4 on this machine with no problems before I put the 4.3.2.1 on it. Is there someplace I can look to find out what is happening to me and my TG4 application?

Kind of concerned about the latest release.

Can you be more specific with what "memory allocation problems" you're running into? Is Windows telling you it has run out of memory and is allocating more (virtual memory)? Or is it some other error message? If you check Task Manager, is Terragen using an unusual amount of memory? How much memory (RAM) do you have?

Hi Oshyan,

I clicked it away so fast that I didn't bother to record the details in depth. All I saw was that a message came up saying that Terragen was using a lot of memory. If it happens again I won't be as fast to close it, and will gather a screen shot. Is there a place with the terragen file structure that saves error messages to? What concerns me is that I never saw any of these message error pop ups until I put on the latest update.  I will try my best to gather more details if it happens again.

Thanks Oshyan

I forgot one of your questions I can answer. I have 24 gig of memory.

No, there is no place that Terragen saves error messages after exit, and it sounds like the error you encountered was actually an operating system error anyway. Windows does usually keep record of such errors. You can check the system log.

Also, the only way to be sure that the new version has anything to do with your error is to be loading the exact same scene with the same settings as you successfully used previously. Is that what you did in this case? If not then it's possible it's an issue with the particular scene or settings you were using. Using a lot of memory is not unusual for Terragen, the concern here is whether the latest version is actually doing something different than the previous ones. I don't know of any changes in this build which should have that affect, but we'll certainly investigate if we can get any more specifics and it is reproducible.

Well considering that I did have a lot of things in the scene file at that time, though it was just sitting there in windows not doing anything I will continue to see if I can get the errir again. No worries though I have been planning a trip to the uk in the near future. Do you allow people to come through your production area. Cause I would love to visit you all. Kind of a AncestryDNA trip for me.

Thanks

Hi Oshyan,

Well it TG4 crashed on me again, this time I was able to catch a screen shot and some of the info from the error in the windows event log.

1. I  did not have TG4 running when I sat at the PC this afternoon, so a startup of the application was required.
2. I was moving around the default scene with the mouse and then I adjusted the detail and anti-aliasing to their max. 0.8 and 8 values respectively. I thought wow this is a cool area of the default scene I would like to save to my hard drive and start with that new location as my location for another project. At this time everything was running very nicely. Until I tried to save the project.
3. I had three other windows opened from TG4 so I could see what was going on with this new location and when I went to save the file to my usual location bombs away.

This is the info from the windows event.log file.

I wait your direction. I really like Terragen and I am a bit distressed that this is happening to me when all the previous version have run so smoothly.

Title: Re: latest TG4 release giving my Win 8.1 memory allocaation problems
Post by: Shield Wulf on December 30, 2018, 07:12:13 PM
Hi Oshyan,

Going through the beginning tutorials that come with the software and I was at the location where it was referring to the terrain. I was in the tweak noise tab in the terrain and the tutorial asked me to change the "Noise Flavour" and when I selected that pull down a second or two went by and the program bombed.. Here is what the Windows event viewer has to say about this latest crash.
I am starting to not trust what I paid for in the latest version. Please help.

Oshyan,

The event viewer says it is an application error. I just need the program I paid good money for to work. And since I am retired now that is valuable money to me.

Thanks,
Randy Nash

Hi Randy,

I don't have the knowledge to diagnose those so we have to wait for Matt's availability. I have flagged it for his attention.

In the meantime I can assure you that if the application does not work for you after troubleshooting, we will refund you. But I hope you can give us a little time to look into it.

I would also ask if you updated anything else in a similar time frame to the Terragen update, for example a Windows update or graphics card driver update. I know it seems like this is directly related to the Terragen update, but no one else seems to be experiencing these issues, and I'm not aware of anything that was changed which should have any such effect on simple dropdowns, etc. It's possible I'm overlooking something, but it's also helpful if we look at the total picture of possible causes.

11/27 - Latest Nvidia  Cuda driver installed.10.0

12/19 - IsoBuster 4.2 Update installed
12/20 - Latest TG4 4.3.21 installed
12/20 - Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4483187)
12/23 - Sketchup 2016 - Demo (which I can remove not a problem)..
12/25 - Lightwave 2018.0.7 64-bit installed
12/25 - Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (64) - 12.0.21005

I do not have an update, as I said it's beyond my ability to troubleshoot at this point. Technically we are going through some holidays at the moment (or just sending). We appreciate your patience just a bit longer.

Hi Oshyan,

Not meant as a harassing email, I was just seeking some feedback. I understand. I'll sit back and wait for your final results. But please if you would keep me updated. That's all I ask.

Hi Randy,

Apologies for the late reply here. I don't know what the cause is from the logs you posted. Which version of Terragen were you using before the issues started? I would suggest going back to that version and using it for a while to see if the problems go away. If you have no problems with the old version then we'll have a strong indication that the problem really is in the recent version(s). It might be caused by something else that changed on your system, so it's important to establish this first, and if it's really in a recent change to Terragen we can try to work out exactly when the problem started.

If you no longer have the previous version to install, email us at support@planetside.co.uk and we'll get you set up with whichever previous installer you need.

Hi Matt,

Without looking at my system to verify what version I was using before I updated i will have to check and see I will take care of your suggestions later today and then let you know what my findings are beginning next week. Wow that sure was a long run on sentence my high school English teacher would be proud of me for that one. Öl.....

Thanks for getting back to me on this guys.
More to come I am sure......

Every project file (TGD) is tagged with the version number that it was last saved from. You could load some of your projects into Terragen and click on the "Project Settings" button at the bottom left of the main window to access this information.

Thanks Matt for that information. I will keep on working with TG.

I will post you on my next set of results.

One question though can I put on my machine both the older and newer
TG's. How would windows react to that?

Thanks Randy

Yes you can, but it's best if you install earlier versions first and install the latest version last. This way you don't have to uninstall anything. It's also best if you treat the latest version as your main version. This minimizes confusion about which version of the application Windows chooses to open (sometimes it seems to have a mind of its own). File associations will be set up to open with the most recently installed version, regardless of version number.

The way I do it is I always keep the latest version in the default install location, i.e. "C:\Program Files\Planetside Software\Terragen 4", and it's always installed last. Every time I'm about to install a new version, first I make a copy of the currently installed Terragen 4 folder, give the copy a name that includes the version number, then install the latest version to the default location.

Hi Matt,

I reloaded the windows system but kept apps, documents and settings today to rule out anything in there misleading plus it will have all the latest updates from Msoft. Then this weekend I will see what comes up with TG4 old and new. That's some great advice you provided thanks very much for that.

Hi Matt,

Now I understand more in depth the meaning of having a good validated system backup offline. At least it's a clean system now. And I followed your suggestion in reply 19 and it worked like a champ to have both versions on my machine at the same time.

Now can both installed versions share a library or will that have to be set separately as well? My guess is that yes they have to be two different libraries one for each version. Please correct me if I am wrong.

They should actually use the same Library since it's stored in a separate, central location and referenced by any installed version.
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Planetside Software\Terragen 4\Terragen Library (on Windows)

This is actually a potential source of versioning issues, and I would not recommend saving anything to the library while running multiple instances from different versions for that reason. But in general it should be fine. If we were to make an update to the Library database system you would not want to write to the library with older versions after that however.
