Title: Hannes - Hangar
Post by: Hannes on March 29, 2016, 06:34:16 AM
Now that we have some more time, I thought I'd try another one.
Here is a scene I created for my Star Wars movie - the interior of the Imperior Star destroyer's hangar. Additionally to Ansel Hsiao aka Fractal Sponge's beautiful model I added a lot of stuff to get more detail in the hangar area.
I added the earth I previously created and I hope it will work.

I have to load this into the FPS Viewer. It is a long way down!

I wasn't so keen about VR after i saw the price of those (hoped Oculus will be cheap).
But this challenge made me wish to buy one.

Even if it doesn't compare to an Oculus Rift or something like that, some cheap solution like Google Cardboard can give you an impression of how it can look like.

Yes maybe i try one of those Hannes.

I have only a Samsung S3 mini, so not much resolution, but it really looks cool.
And as I wrote here:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,21314.msg213808.html#msg213808
spending a few Euros more than for the cardboard solution is not too tough, but I think it's worth it.

Thanks guys. Just finished an 8K render to see, if there are any flaws, I didn't notice so far. It took 12 hours to render (not too bad!), but it was the planet that took most of the time.
I'll have a look at it today...

I know how it feels...
Nice surface anyway, and that hangar, looks familiar... 8)
go with this!

I guess I'm done now. I added some more things and deleted unnecessary ones.
I decided to have a visible starfield. I know, the stars wouldn't actually be visible in this situation, but who cares, as long as it looks cool ;)
(you also wouldn't hear anything in space, but there are only very few scifi movies without loud explosions and stuff like that)

I'll render an 8K image overnight to see if anything is correct, and tomorrow I'll probably submit it. Here is a 2K render. I sharpened it a bit. The final one won't be sharpened of course.

Good work, Hannes. I just had a look in FSP viewer of your previous version, so curious to see what has changed. Terrifyingly deep, I guess with the goggles on, you have to hold on to the doorpost  ;)

Thanks Ulco. There are not too many changes, but a few ones that make me feel happy  :)
Watching this scene with goggles is indeed much more intense than with a regular player and a monitor. It's good to be seated while watching!

Thanks Jo.
I just submitted my entry. Now that the pressure is over, I'll try some things with this scene. Since it's a previously used scene, some things are already animated. Maybe I can create a little 360° animation?! I'll see...
Title: Re: Hannes - Hangar
Post by: Hannes on April 07, 2016, 11:06:35 AM
Just for fun, not for the competition: at the moment I am creating a 360° movie of this scene. Man, I had to change a lot of things to make it work. I discovered that some of the meshes were faulty and thus flickering, and I had to leave out the force field, because it has a water shader inside the network to create the smooth transitions. The force field looks kind of cool, but doubles rendertimes! Too much for testing purposes. Now I'm struggling a bit with the GI caching.
I'm rendering only at 1280X640 px to make sure I'm still alive when it's done. I loaded a short (heavily flickering) test movie into my phone and watched it with my VR goggles. Now that you realize that the ship is moving, you should be seated even more!!

Post by: Hannes on April 20, 2016, 08:00:39 AM
Just for fun I rendered a 300 frames animation in 2K of my scene after I added some more stuff.
I had to render the earth and stars background, the force field, the hangar itself and the fighter (which is slowly moving from below the camera to the actual position) separately, because like I wrote in this thread:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,21411.0.html
it's almost impossible to create a proper GI cache when the whole scene is moving very fast.
The fighter is a nice find from Animium. I had to tear the whole thing apart to get some decent texturing. I'm planning to add some thruster glow (or whatever it's called).
Title: Re: Hannes - Hangar
Post by: Hannes on April 20, 2016, 08:03:25 AM
Btw: I animated the orange lights (rotating), the pods, the fighter as I wrote and the whole spaceship is moving, so that the background doesn't stay the same all the time.
And of course since the competition is over, there's some postwork (contrast, saturation and some additional glow for the force field).

Thanks guys,
actually I have no idea how to watch this on the computer. I downloaded a Google Cardboard-compatible app for my phone named AAA VR Cinema, which can play 360° movies. Maybe someone knows a software that can play it on a computer?!

The fumes are nothing special. I created a sphere in 3ds Max for each thruster and stretched it a lot, then cut them off in the middle, so that they looked like cut-in-a-half cigars, duplicated (inside white - outside blueish) and downscaled them. I used some image map falloff using Ulco's transparency method:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,15757.msg154133.html#msg154133

Since this is not contest content anymore, there is some After effects post work (glow, flickering)

cool stuff on the fumes, keep forgetting I don't need to use a cloud every time...also be good for car exhaust but reversed with a small start and a fat end.

I found this guys:

But be cautious.
There is a post that says that he had problem with his Windows build after he installed this.
But it worked for me after using different settings without a problem in Windows.
You can see the video playing while looking around as intended at least.

You first have to download a software ("360 Video Metadata") that writes some metadata into the movie, then you can just upload it. Got the link from the Youtube help page.

Ulco, I guess that would take a year! :) But you can rightclick the video and make it loop. Better than nothing...
