In a recent render I noticed you told someone who used one of your trees..."its not necessary to credit me everytime"....I beg to differ.
You deserve a lot of credit and it must be a great feeling to know you have influenced many artists and helped their images to look great.
Way to go man!!!......Keep on!!!
Thanks

I second Markal. Between yourself and Walli, my T2 work has improved alot. 8) It is the great plants. Otherwise, the renders would not have that much variation.

Very much appreciated, Marc! The site really looks cool, and your trees are the icing on the cake for a lot of people who don't have the possibilities to grow some! One thing that you might want to look at: everytime you hit a link to another page, the image rolls down again (page refresh). It's kind of annoying (if you're a perfectionist such as I am). I'll have a frequent look. Thanks!

Thank you everyone. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I'm having fun doing it.

I have already made some updates to the Conifers and did a complete rebuild of the Chestnut Tree. You can view any site updates through the Site Updates link. Be sure to refresh your browser.

@Dune: I fixed the jumping around issue (I think) so, let me know. Good eye, sir.

Cheers.

We need more people giving some of these things away for free. I know a lot of work is involved and artists should be paid for their efforts, but I can barely afford to pay my rent some months. I love to play with terragen though, and finding gems like these opens up a million new possibilities. Thank you so much.

Hey Marc, you'd have to move the 'decidious trees' background a few pixels to the right (or was it left). It's slightly off. Otherwise working fine! I like the simple, clean way you set it up.

Excuse me, how to use these trees?
Title: Re: Trees for Terragen 2 is LIVE
Post by: DVA99 on February 13, 2011, 06:19:30 AM
Download and use as an object alone or in populations.

If you don't know how to add models in TG2 to your scene:

Click on Objects - add object - object/population - pick Obj or Tgo (from MGebhart site probably tgo files) - browse to where you have your models - double click the model - now you see the model in your node list - place it on your terrain.

Otherwise you'll find hundreds of threads about this in this forum = use the search function.

What files specifically were you looking for?  I have quite a few of them myself.  I may be able to send you some.  Of the free ones, of course.  All the ones I have from Gebhart were all free.  Obviously, I would not distribute the NWDA stuff (although I have yet to purchase any from them).

Also, check out X-Frog's 130 free plants (google it).  They have some good stuff.  Not 130 distinct plants, however.  Much of it is different age stages of the plant, but certainly a welcome addition to a model library.

Ah, yes, I forgot about the free xfrog trees -- I'll check them out.

I need a juniper -- there are several types and I'm not sure of the exact name.  Probably see it after looking through the xfrog site.

My project is modeling two condo buildings and the current landscape.  Then we can change the landscaping.  The junipers go in the middle of the four "flower rings" in front of the buildings.  About 561,000 polys so far, all done by myself in Lightwave (including the palm trees.)  No real attempt at texturing yet.

Hmmm, I don't think Gebhart had any junipers on his site.  If he did, I didn't download them before the site disappeared.  It looks like Xfrog has a couple of models, and it appears one of them is available for free.  There are a couple of other variations you can purchase, but the free one (click on the link on the right) can be found here:

http://xfrog.com/product/X-44.html (http://xfrog.com/product/X-44.html)

By the way, how is lightwave for modelling?  Is it particularly easy to use?

Autodesk also has 96 xFrog plants that can be downloaded for free, and prickly juniper is among them. ( http://seek.autodesk.com/product/latest/agg/xfrog/xfrog-inc-greenworks-organic-software/ML07 ).  You'll need to check T's & C's to determine fair useage. I've never used them in anything but private use.

Lightwave is great, especially for hard surface modeling.  Combine it with the LWCAD plugin and it really shines for architectural modeling.  There's some nice examples here: http://www.wtools3d.com/gallery.php

I think it's easy to use, but it comes down to personnel preference.

What about getting LW designs into Terragen?  And texturing?  Do you texture in LW and then import.  Or must you texture in Terragen?
Title: Re: Trees for Terragen 2 is LIVE
Post by: jaf on August 10, 2012, 09:52:55 PM
I usually texture in Lightwave -- mostly image maps or simple diffuse colors .  I use Seamless Texture Generator Pro quite a bit for things like stucco, metals, flooring, etc. to make them seamless.  And then Shadermap 2 to make the specular, normal, and displacement maps.  I apply these in Lightwave.

Then I use the free Poseray program to import the Lightwave model.  Poseray is great for checking/correcting geometry and gathering all the texture maps.  Then I export it as a package into a Terragen "data" folder (this is the .obj and .jpg texture maps.)  So I have all my originals in my Lightwave content directory and my new obj and copies of the texture maps in my Terragen folder.  Poseray has the option to limit (convert) the size of the texture maps to say 512 pixels (many times it makes no sense to use high resolution maps on objects that won't render very large, and a good seamless map can look just as good at a lower resolution.)

On thing nice about lightwave is, if you build a model that's 10 meters tall, it will import into Terragen and be 10 meters tall.  If you build it to set on the zero point (y axis) in Lightwave, it will import to the zero point (y axis) in Terragen.  The x and z axis match too.  This allows you to build an object at a certain x/y/z in Lightwave, then build another object at a specific spot relative to the first object, and then import each separately into Terragen and the positions are maintained.  Hope that makes sense.
