Title: Reflectivity on imported objects
Post by: Kadri on May 15, 2018, 03:47:08 AM
Just curious, is the glass shader (transparency, reflectivity especially) acting any different on imported objects then on a default planet used displacement (for example)?
I exported and imported a scene to get faster render times but it looks different.
Getting the same amount of displacement is kinda not possible (depends on the scene of course) with too much displacement,
so there are probably quite a difference in the scene with normal Terragen displacement (and the renderer used) and imported object.
But is it this or is Terragen handling those kind of cases different?
Instead of speculating i wanted just to ask.

I don't know, but I assume it's quite different as imported objects can't be displaced as good as internal stuff (you need a lot of polys). Probably, the glass shader will react in sort of the same way, being less effective on much displaced imported objects.

I used a displaceable Terragen cube object for the scene for example.
I don't know, but in theory it could be the same. Curious.

In TG3 there was a difference between a TG-sphere and an imported one.

Maybe it's still something like that in TG4, don't know, though.

The Glass shader behaves the same on imported vs. native objects, however *some* native objects are Displaceable, and these are dynamically subdividable when with Ray Trace Objects enabled, whereas imported objects are not (you have to disable Ray Trace Objects either globally or on a per-object basis), and the results can be messy/ugly. It sounds like what you are seeing is the difference between a native displaceable object and a standard imported object.

Thanks. Yes it is that most probably.

I forget that thread. Thanks for reminding. It is helpful.
