Title: Uneligible entry
Post by: Dune on October 30, 2014, 03:54:04 AM
A request from Danny,  to be used to promote this super contest. All internal stuff from TG3, no fancy extra's. I hope this board will be filled to the brim!

Nice Landscape Dune. It has a potential the for grandeur and desolation of icy places.  I have an idea but not much time at the moment ( too many jewellery commissions with Christmas coming up!). It's a picture I want to do anyway just not sure I'll finish it in time!

Mick, the deadline is February so I have faith you'll manage to make something nice :) ;)

Great idee for contest! And great scenes Dune! Here is a VERY INSPIRATIONAL time lapse video on Vimeo called 'Midnight Sun | Iceland'. Gives a great feel on Iceland at it's most impressive and original:  http://vimeo.com/30581015

Better make a new/separate thread to show your image/WIP Ade ;)
Keep working on it! You started early!

Same to you Mick, get started quickly before the busy times come ;)
Then when you're busy the users will give you feedback so that you can nail it in 2015 :)

Well Ulco I'd say you hit most of the sweet spots for an 'Icelandic' scene, your early image sets a nice stage for the rest of us!  One small thought on this image; are the little sod-like structures meant to be early inhabitants? I read that the Norse first established colonies in the latter part of the 9th century, however Iceland at that time was forested with much more ground-cover, not like the open nearly treeless sparse terrain of today. So early structures presumably would have been in a much different environment. Just curious. Reading about Iceland's history and realizing that what I had thought to be a rather pristine  and severe place: that actually Iceland stands as a example of the destructive environmental practices of prior cultures; deforestation by the original settlers and continued over-grazing by sheep. One source cited the vast 'desert' that comprises much of Iceland and that the American Moon teams used Iceland to rehearse planned surface activities! I think a visit to Iceland might be added to my 'bucket-list' itinerary!

Wow, zaxxon you've just made me think about this whole thing in a totally different way: people could choose to depict Iceland at different points in history! I had been assuming present-day, with minimal trees, etc. but if indeed it was that much different pre-human, it would be quite an interesting take on the theme to try to visualize what it may have been like centuries or millennia ago... The lost forests of Iceland... :D

"The Lost Forests of Iceland" I like it! Hmmm.....

Thanks Doug. Though I'm usually in some archaeaological mood, not this time. These sheds are there present day, see one of the images that Oshyan posted in another Iceland thread. They are TG cubes, by the way, with fake stones on steep slopes, grass (procedural) on the lesser slopes. Walls are cubes as well, same surface.

You set me thinking, Doug. Experimenting now with procedural petrified treetrunks....

Petrified treetrunks, remnants from ancient Iceland, with a dead volcano in the background. I'm gonna work on the gravel and insert Jochens landrover, which is much nicer than this rover. Maybe some smoke from the crater...
Some post on the levels, but I don't know what is nicer.

Si tu veux j'ai fais un shader pour rendre la voiture sale ?
Si, t'es intéressé.

If you want I made a shader to make dirty car?
If you're interested.  :)

Merci Bastien, but I know how to dirty up a car.

Credits to Jochen for his top-quality landrover, and the Xoio guys, for Steve this time!

Nice procedural petrified treetrunks. 8)
Would be even better if there were some trunks
or trunkparts lying on the ground.

Nice caldera! But would there be any tree trunks to petrify if the early settlers had harvested the wood for structures and fuel? Stumps make great fuel as well. Where's my darn time machine anyway...
Title: Re: Uneligible entry
Post by: Dune on November 04, 2014, 03:32:23 AM
I don't know, it was just an experiment for the trunks. And lying trunks are quite impossible procedurally, I'd say. Unless with the displacable objects, of course.

Maybe some very early petrified settlers then? ;)

Another Iceland non-eligible entry, black beach (which I actually saw in New Zealand, near Auckland). I have some more ideas to modify, as I dont like the streams and inland area.

By the way: no compute terrain and no lake or water shader.

I like the course of the first river; and, the multiple outlet of the second. Would be nice to combine the two somehow.
Title: Re: Uneligible entry

The first was a warped SSS, the second an drawn image map (doubled) + a soft-edged sea-end SSS for additional shiny sand there. The islands are dropped in as warped SSS masks.

Some really cool images, Dune.
I love the ones with the sea; no water shader or lake object............image map?..........

BTW, 3 pages and no-one picked up the "uneligible"?................
Sorry, I can't help it; I was a teacher for 23 years.............
FYI, "ineligible"..................
No insult intended to anyone; Dune your English is way better than my Terragen..........lol......
And I just checked your profile to find you're Dutch, so that means even more.
I was born in Breda {The Netherlands}, I can also confirm that your Dutch is quite likely way better than my Dutch, as I emigrated with my family to Australia when I was 6...................

I figured you were Dutch. Good to live in Aussie I presume, Holland is pretty crowded nowadays.

The sea is a series of warped simple shapes. I've got a similar file at NWDA.

And thanks for the correction.

No problem - it's not as interesting as Terragen but as your English is pretty darned great for a non-English-speaking person; I figured you took some pride in your mastery of English (the absolute worst language on Earth when it comes to spelling) and would like to know...............

Just a curiosity @Dune: Can you explain how you did the terrain without the compute terrain node and the sea/lake without a lake or water shader node? ( i suppose this last with a plane with applied a shader)  :)
Thank's

You're referring to the black beach, I suppose. If you have part of the planet that's completely flat, you can add some bluegreen colors to that (sea colors) and lay a RT reflective shader across. Then just add some wave like displacements with any PF. The rest of the planet can be made into hills and such by using a mask. And if you don't need slopes or accurate heights for texturing, then a compute terrain can be left out.

Thank you for the answer Ulco. Interesting approach, but why this? Do you have better rendering performances?

Just because there are so many possibilities in TG I did it this way, but compute terrain takes render time, and so does transparent water (especially if it's rough). So the less nodes the faster.

Really nice. Those flowers and vegetation contrast well against the brownish soil. And, a great idea for the shape of the mountain.

I like very much this last picture! Sweet detail on the foreground with flowers and plants, Intriguing combination of mountains in the background and the strata rock on the right side. Even if it needs still some work, it is already indeed interesting!  :D
