Title: Sculptris a work-in-progress sculpting tool
Post by: Kadri on March 14, 2010, 07:40:28 PM
"This is a work-in-progress sculpting tool that I've been developing since early December 2009.
Its main feature is dynamic mesh tesselation that will provide additional detail where necessary, without the user needing to worry about it.

I've released an alpha version that is available for anyone who wants to try it out.
Be aware that it's an early build though, and it is known to crash and misbehave occasionally. Save your work often to avoid getting burned."

It is a nice software very easy to use . You can make anything you want in a more organic way . For now free to use.
I searched the forum but didn't find a post about it. I thought i posted about this earlier...didn't i ?

If i did , i will change this topic to about anything with amnesia  ;D

And guys please don't forget this is an Alpha built ! Be careful !

Kadri.

Updated to v1.01 which should fix a few issues.

In the Newtek forums they say there are still some little issues .

And... most incredible news... Pixologic, the firm which had a lot to loose from this program, "buys" it...  ;D. A couple of only-for-show updates and then the oblivion.

B.t.w., it is a not bad business plan: create a program which is a deadly menace to a big commercial product, scare enough those people and then "sell" them the rights to the code, sign a non-compete agreement and cash in your 7-digit (in dollars) check. Really not bad. Usually it is called blackmail ;D

The other parts may be true too , Latego but this will what definitively happen "A couple of only-for-show updates and then the oblivion."  :)
I tried Zbrush a couple of times but couldn't stand the interface and so... Blender 1 and Zbrush 2... 2 software i hate to use and don't want to use...
This little program was so easy to use and understand...Sad! At least we have the Alpha!

Another example was a program called Moonlight3D. It was a almost pixel-per-pixel clone of Lightwave. It was nearing the point of being usable and then... the developer went MIA. After about 18 months of silence, the web site disappeared. I assume that somebody got richer in the process.

If I remember well, it's the work of a guy who restarted development, switching from C++ to Java. One-man-operation, going fast nowhere [shaking head icon here].

actualy I am happy that Pixologic bought him and the software and not Autodesk ;-)

It might well be that Pixologic somewhen stops sculptris. But the important thing is hat they hired the person behind sculptris, so I think the technology will "survive".
Apart from that Pixologic has been one of the most generous companies out there - I bought ZBrush 1.5 many years ago and since then ALL updates have been free of charge. And it was said that even ZBrush4 update will be free.

zBrush is plain awesome.  Pixologic deserves all the kudos possible.  I love their product.

I have only been messing with this for about three hours. I am amazed at how easy the modeling is.

It sure looks promising. The one I got from the pixologic site was an alpha-6 version. Where would I find the beta? Or wouldn't there be any difference?
