I remember reading something about xFrog plants being available in single packages at a reasonable (reduced) price by this January. Anyone heard the scoop on this lately?

Hi, it's me, the Urban Cowpoke.
We are releasing, XfrogPlants for Terragen 2, the same day as the release of Terragen 2.
That has been agreed upon, by myself, Stewart McSherry, ceo of xfrog inc. and Mssr. Matt Fairclough, author extraordinaire of the Terragen thing.
Via handshake and bottle of 2003 Delas Hermitage, Feb 18 2009, 8pm, we agreed on a March launch.
Which means it is finally happening. You are getting a release of TG2 and a release of many affordable plants to go with.

Oh my gosh. All complaints sealed and burned.
Thanks for your announcement. I wondered if this was what was happening. And I don't feel silly asking...only grateful and looking forward to this.
Wait a second! Is this it? The big announcement everyone has been waiting for? And it comes from who? Xfrog? Buried in a thread about xfrog products? I find that more than a bit curious. And I am not surprised people are questioning which year in March this is supposed to occur with this track record. :-\ Matt, Oshyan, anyone?

You have to understand that with that track record, they might assume we don't believe them anymore anyways, and thus don't announce it until it's actually finished (which could be in March, unless you decide to go look for a huge bug, and manage to find one... :D).
Xfrog doesn't have this reputation (as far as I know), so they can announce their own release any time.

Who are you referring to Martin? Mind explaining?
Yeah, I don't live in L.A., but a party sounds like a good idea for the four or five people who could make it.
Anyone notice that not one Rep. (Matt, Jo or Oshyan) from planetside has commented or verified this?
It is true, we are coordinating for a release in March. We should have more information for you next week.
Matt
Great! Thanks Matt
Didn't sound like he was happy to announce it this soon, but thanks for confirming Matt.
I won't be mad if you can't make the release date though, wasn't your idea to tell us already...
Hey! LA is only six hours away for me.
Thanks Matt. I agree with Mohawk. Release dates are meant to be broken. That's why I tend to give long projections and way out end-dates for my projects. Rather tell them I'll be long and be short than visa versa.
Anyway, I like the mentality of 3DRealms - WHEN IT'S FINISHED. No need to squabble over disagreements about this, since I know many don't agree with me already. Anyway, COOL, COOL, COOL.

Press release, some free highend plants, are coming next week. I placed some info, ihere, because i thought the users of the prerelease of TG2, would not only be excited to know that plants are coming, but that, they are paired with a release of TG2. Matt fully supported me saying that. We are meeting daily. I thought it would be something good for you all, who have been very patient, to receive fresh info as it develops, rather than just point you towards a press release.
Questions/requests ?
@xfrog - Should we just wait to see a catalog of the new goods with prices or could we maybe get an idea or two. :P
I can wait. Just asking. LOL
@Matt - Can we expect some changes with the Gold release?

Will give away something highend shortly and see what forum users can do with it. Maybe a competition, for free products, since the economic times are grim for some folks. Press release next week will explain what's coming in TGO format. Zero chance of launch date slippage.
Some strong words, xfrog. Ok, we shall see. If this really happens this soon, it'll be huge (including this new Greenworks-Planetside alliance).

Our release in March will be the 2.0 final release (the 'gold' release if that's what you want to call it).
These are just some of the improvements (more will be included in the final release):
Lots of bugs have been fixed. We're still bug fixing, however, and this process will continue after 2.0 for inclusion in further updates.
Some georeferencing capabilities, and automatic georeferencing for geotiffs that have as associated .tfw files. This works well with geotiff elevation data downloaded from http://seamless.usgs.gov/
Fixed some shader bugs. Improved quality of GI in clouds and atmospheres. Options to extend the region in which ray traced polygons are fully subdivided (affecting shadows and reflections).
Incremental saving for project files (adds a version number an increments it each time you save incremental). Some other saving options in Preferences.
The 3D Preview has quite a lot of new things. There's a compass to show heading, along with indicators to show where your sunlights are coming from. There's also a measuring tool for finding out the distance between points in the preview. Distance to camera is displayed in the 3D Preview Location window. You can now navigate/move the camera using the keyboard. Animated camera paths are shown in all previews which show the camera.
Some new features to copy and paste coordinates, altitude values and slope values from the 3D preview into parameters. Other copy and paste functionality for vector parameters (e.g. object positions) and drag-and-drop for colours into text files, or pasting into other applications.
There are now checks to stop circular paths being made in the node network. These could previously cause a crash.
Added some new button icons, tweaked some old ones.
These are just some of the improvements which are already finished. We'll provide a more complete list soon.
If you still haven't pre-purchased a TG2 Deep license at $199 US (or $299 with animation), you're running out of time to get it at today's pre-release prices. The prices will increase with the final release of 2.0. Looking ahead, we would like to release a "Standard Edition" of Terragen 2 at a lower price, but we haven't started on that yet and do not have a schedule for release.
Matt
All right my incremental save request made it!! Thanks Mat. :) Lot's of nice stuff there Mat!! wahooo!!
I suppose with the inclusion of incremental saving on the cards for the gold release, I shall ask the question that normally comes up on forums when software gets this feature: and that is in two parts.
Firstly: is it planned at some point to allow user selection of the incremental save time with some kind of preference option with a selection of save time presets for which the user can select, and functionality to go back to the default schema if required.
Secondly: is the issue of user definable incremental save naming, [if not already implemented] it would be vary useful if users could set their own file name and/ or file path location for the incremental save this would be important in production houses that have their own naming conventions for projects and for users that have small render networks at home. Sorry to be off topic.
Regards to you.
Cyber-Angel ;D
Thanks Matt. Lots of cool improvements, which all show you've paid attention to our requests - even our least tactful and more demanding requests.
Can't wait.
Thanks Matt; some look at this as the final release - but no; like the earliest automobile, it will go on and keep getting better and better.
Excelent and exciting news, glad my compass request made it lol.

We'll reveal those things soon, in advance of the actual release.

Well how about that! This dude comes in here bragging about being CEO of greenworks, feeds us a bunch of BS about giving us some free high end plants then doesn't follow through with what he said.
A Man Is Only As Good As His Word. Really it's not about getting a couple of freebies. It's the Principle of not doing what he said. Writing software is one thing, knowing how to run a business is another. And they wonder why I ask? March of what year? If they ran into a problem the least they could do is come back and say hey, gang sorry but the plants aren't ready yet. But to say nothing is totally disrespectful. Something we should be use to by now.
Unbelievable ..........

Hey Stewart, long time no hear. Hope all is going well with you. That was some nice genie you uncorked in here. :)
I've got some 2.0 XfrogPlants libraries - will those be at all useful with Terragen2, or will there be some way to convert them? Sorry if this is something I should already know - I just bought TG2 yesterday and am still waiting for a registration key to get sent to me. (Anyone know how long that usually takes? It's been about 36 hours and I'm chomping at the bit to break out of that 800x600 limitation). ;)
Xfrog's current library can already be used with TG2. The OBJ format works well and TG2 has been designed to load them with proper scale when the right options are chosen during the object loading process (you'll be prompted for that).
Key files are currently generated and sent out manually. We have a bit of a backlog because our usual registration handler is on a short vacation, but we're working to clear it and you should receive your key very soon.
- Oshyan
Thanks for all the info, Oshyan. :)
EDIT: Hey, look what's in the mail. Thanks for the key file. 8)

XfrogPlants 2.0 DVDs contain OBJ. OBJ -> TG2
if you want to edit the XFR procedural models(change branching, etc),
or create new plants:
Xfrog 3.5 -> OBJ -> TG2
Xfrog 4.3 Maya -> OBJ -> TG2
Xfrog 4.3 C4D -> OBJ -> TG2

No sense wasting the time to email him as he doesn't answer emails anyway. What gets me the most is, he came in here running off at the mouth about being Xfrog's CEO and doesn't do what he said. And on top of that, he doesn't even have the balls or common decency to come back and face the music. I thought I was arrogant but he has me beat! Just to point out to those that think I'm bitching about not getting something for free. I could care less about free xfrog plants. I have plenty of plants in my collect already. However I would have spent the money for some quality Xfrog plants made for TG, but now I don't know that I care to give them my business. I have my doubts that they would lend any support or answer any messages/emails if a paying customer was to encounter problems with their products. If they are not careful and don't start showing some attentiveness to Customers or Potential Customers someone might come along and offer better plants for sale along with good support and customer relations. Who would you rather deal with?
Have a TG Day! :)

I have corresponded with Stewart for almost 10 years whenever I had questions or issues with the standalone Xfrog products or the Xfrog for C4D product and various libraries. Stewart has always responded personally and has offered assistance numerous times. I have nothing but praise for the product support at Greenworks. The implications above are not accurate. Certainly this rollout has not gone as intended, but a week from now or a month from now or whatever, it will all be water under the bridge and we can all be happily rendering our Xfrog content in TG2. However unpleasant it seems at this very moment, this hiccup is not indicative of the way that Stewart and his company run their business.

Quote from: buzzzzz1 on April 04, 2009, 11:37:11 AMNo sense wasting the time to email him as he doesn't answer emails anyway.
I have corresponded with Stewart for almost 10 years whenever I had questions or issues with the standalone Xfrog products or the Xfrog for C4D product and various libraries. Stewart has always responded personally and has offered assistance numerous times. I have nothing but praise for the product support at Greenworks. The implications above are not accurate. Certainly this rollout has not gone as intended, but a week from now or a month from now or whatever, it will all be water under the bridge and we can all be happily rendering our Xfrog content in TG2. Well I'm happy for you but I haven't had that experience. I have emailed him several times in the past with no response at all, so all I can do is relate my own experience.
Stewart replied to me equally as fast, it was a matter of minutes!
first of all, normaly all issues are taken care of. second, it´s always a good idea to write in places where you can expect to get support. When Stewart is not answering here the threads, it might be that he simply does not check all forums on internet everyday. If he would do so, then Greenworks wouldn´t be possible to release new stuff at all.
There is a Xfrog usergroup and soon there will be even be more. And on this usergroup you not only get help from xfrog users, this group is also closely followed by Greenworks.
You always have to keep in mind that on company addresses you recieve dozens or hundreds of spam mails and sometimes an important mail can slip or is filtered. That is for sure not nice, but I think its important to faith the real world ;-)
I mean even a small freelancer like me gets so many spam mails, I really don´t want to know how much Stewart gets on all xfrog addresses.
best,
Walli
Well .... the week is almost over! >:(

Well, never heard of Easter Egg plants? :D
Fooled again! Now I don't believe in the Easter Bunny or the Xfrog.

It's format mating season, didn't you know? ;D
I guess it was in flux at XFrog's end, probably some conversion trouble...
Old TGO files will still work, don't worry. :)
