When I add two zeroes to the default lake radius value Terragen crushes.
Terragen v4.1.11 on Windows 10.
Do you want me to provide any additional information about my system?
If you want a really big 'lake' it's better to use a sphere object. Copy size and location from the main planet, uncheck shadows, and add a new surface layer as main surface. There you can add all water stuff as child, and use displacement offset to raise/lower the water level.

Tried it. It crashes here too.
I've heard it before, and I think the lake object is a bit of a special object, not really to be messed with much.
