Title: little riddle
Post by: DocCharly65 on January 11, 2016, 03:54:57 AM
sorry - as I told, I have not so much time for new stuff this year but sometimes there are little new ideas.

Today you get a little riddle...
what's the name of the town?
and what background has the decaying store?

...I think owners of a Playstation will know best  ;)

[attach=1] and 3D: [attach=2]

Perhaps I will integrate this scenerey in my film project starting with a more beautiful sight:

[attach=3] (3D tonight)

and then howling sirens while the fog is coming...

This  time I could use an advantage of my absurdly big tgd files (in this case the suburban road)... I can find and create many new places in those big areas.
BWM, cigaret box and the billboard from archive3D, the Rabbit and the pallets from TF3DM, coke-cans from turbosquid. Also from Turbosquid: The abandoned srore - with many time invested in photoshopping the textures  ;)  )

That is one hell of a building, Nils. Very fine texturing. Great render also. I do miss a little shine on the car though, do you have a RT reflection on it?
Title: Re: little riddle
Post by: DocCharly65 on January 11, 2016, 04:06:37 AM
Thanks Dune  :)

The car... yes I am a little bit unsatisfied too. I used only very very slight reflections to avoid exploding rendertimes with all that fog!

When I start to prepare the animation I'll puzzle out - still not sure about the changes in my script (again  ;) )
Perhaps I will even change the car competely because BMW is not a brand that one associates with horror films  :o  ;D

No idea where this could be, but anyway a very very cool scene! Indeed the building is incredible!

Now for the nitpicking: ;)

Shouldn't the car stand a bit more on the sidewalk? Who parks like this? OK, there are some women in the scene... (No offense! No offense! ;) ;) ;))
Everything is perfectly clean. There should be a lot more dirt and trash in the scene to my taste. And the area where this incredibly fleshy lady in the green dress is standing has a very obvious tiling.

Looking closer to the image I had the impression even more that everything looks perfectly clean except the house. Somehow it looks like planted into a typical german suburb. You surely know we germans tend to clean our sidewalks (and sometimes the streets as well) with our tongues. But only on saturdays. Right after we have washed our cars.
With our tongues.

With fog (and flashlight  ;)) I would say it's Silent Hill - just as it is written on the window.
Title: Re: little riddle
Post by: DocCharly65 on January 11, 2016, 05:53:01 AM
Hannes, I will look for some dirt...
Strange... search for dirt to integrate it somewhere to not be seen as a too tidy german ...  :o  ;D ;D ;D

Very good, Rumburak...  :)

The original first game is quite old now. Was a revolutionary new technics on the PS1 in 1999.
And a typical message in the game was: "The door lock seems to be broken - I can't open the door" while you have to check about 20,000 doors...  ;D

So I thought... how could this be happened? -- of course: The Locksmith is closed (probably eaten by a monster)  ;)

scary place!
(silent hill!)
great texture work, cool model...
more grime is definitely needed... cigarette box seems a bit big?
maybe some cigarette ends/butts
that lady gets about!
:)
all in all a great scene!
:)

Yep, "silent hill". Not very hard since the sign says silent hill on it  ;D

The scale if off though compare the woman to the door way.

Great otherwise

 8) Nice texturing Nils.
Noticed that the texture of the wall to the right of the entrance is mirrored, though.

Another car... hmmm... how about a Landy? ;)

Thanks for the c&c. Your suggestions let me do some little changes:

The pavement in front of and next to the abandoned building is exchanged completely to get rid of the tiling view.

The telefone poles are set a bit to the back to have place forsetting back the house too.

On NWDA I found the very helpful Dirt Pack vol 1 to make the street and sidewalk a bit "busier"
Must be 7-8 populations to get the whole street covered without too obvious recurrences.

BMW exchanged with the Lincoln Navigator - it could be Rosy's company car and she inspects the building in terms of business acquisition?

Also changed POV to get a better view onto the side of the car with a bit reflections. A direct front view looked bad.

[attach=1]

I will add one more "dirt"-pop to the sidewalk on the reight and try to mirror the shop sign on the right  ;)
In the original texture there was a big fat disturbing and hard shadow of a powerline I had to retouch. On the windows you can see some rests but thy are not disturbing in my eyes. But on the building bricks it was some hours work - so this will be easy to do  ;D

Nice changes.
I would place the lamp more in the middle of the car and the manhole.
As it is now the picture feels divided in two halves to me.
If it is a moving camera scene this might not matter much.
Title: Re: little riddle
Post by: DocCharly65 on January 12, 2016, 08:52:48 AM
Thanks Kadri.

The Lamppost is a bit a problem:
I need it for a 3D stereoscopic render.
I don't want to loose the second one left out of the camera in the Fog-Version
All Lampposts are connected in a 1.5 miles long population and I want to avoid variing distances between them.

Anyway my plans meet your prediction - the camera will move and turn...

I'm already excited and waiting to go home for some new ideas  :o ;D

As far as I know you can move single instances of a population in the actual version of TG,
or do you want to keep your lampposts perfectly regular?

Cheers,
J

Usually you were right! But I've done it again! I reached the limit of either my PC or Terragen - I am not sure  ;D
I can't edit any more population... Loading the scene into Terragen needs about 10 minutes even with my core i7  ;)

But I was able to do some more tweaks:
I just moved the lamppost objects via translation of the object shader and keeping the pop as it is. I only had to care that no lamppost is placed in a house, crosswalk or something like that  ;)  and I needed something for the foreground
To replace the missing lamp I fixed two lamps on the building.
Some ivy in the house, a bench and some more little things to explore - and here we are:

Not 100% sure but could be. You did more texturing work. I just repaiered some little things from this verison:

Found it first time on archive3D a year ago but the download link didn't work. On open3Dmodel.com I found it again some days ago and it worked. In that scond I knew that boy has to guard the bike  ;D

 8) I got also some c&c from my girl - so I will do at least one last change:

The big brand new Lincoln must leave  :'( (in this scene only - I'll park em a bit rear of our POV ;) )
I'll put a smaller older car there  :'(

But she's right  :-*  The Lincoln may be cool but it disturbs the scenery a bit through its mightiness.
In the animation it may be ok but for the still image I'll give it a try using something smaller.

Funny that you mention, Ulco  ;D  I have already placed a Fiat Uno there  ;D
...

Dear Bobby unfortunately I must make you explode probably  ;)  In the next render that Fiat will not only be parked partially on the side walk! There will also be a van parking in wrong direction on the wrong side of the street partially on the side walk!  ;D  ...  Sorry... small town with it's own rules  ;)

Tonight the render should be finished. Perhaps then I try a panorama view of the complete road. I still have a panorama viewer on my PC.

And on the right side of the toy rabbit I want to add a restored Isetta...

50 hours rendertime... (25 h for each: left and right eye)
The Lincoln is gone and there are 3 unspectacular cars instead.
I couldn't get the fiat dirtier but I like the older but well maintained car it is in the image.
I hope my fantasy-license plates are not too absurd. I did a bit rechereche to find out that the "Konami- Silent Hill" was inspired by Centralia (Pennsylvania).

[attach=1]  and 3D anaglyph: [attach=2]

The foggy version must wait because I want to do some little experiments after I found that nice Isetta:

Thanks  :)

Ulco, your Wall and the panorama-animation was such a big inspiration that I remembered an old hobby I had some years ago: Panorama photography by taking 50-90 single photos with my Nikon, stitching them and watching on a panorama viewer
(I used Panorado:  http://www.panorado.com/de/PanoradoJsDemo.php (http://www.panorado.com/de/PanoradoJsDemo.php))
So I reinstalled that old software and I played around with my "Silent Hill Suburban Road"...
And today we take a 360° look... I hope it works. I got a little server space from my boss:

http://pdf.effekta.com.de/DownloadsTemp/Online_Viewer/Pano_SHN_150121_001.htm (http://pdf.effekta.com.de/DownloadsTemp/Online_Viewer/Pano_SHN_150121_001.htm)

It's still a very small grainy test though I rendered a 3000x4000 pixel image. I had to use a PC with at least 12GB Ram. 8GB is too small and every try to render ended in a crash. And even this resolution is quite small. at the moment I try a 5000x6667 px render. still works on the 12GB PC  ;)  I will try a bigger resolution later.

Unfortunately I can't even upload the jpg because of it's 12 MB size. So I really hope the link works (on my PC in office it does with some browsers). But you need a little patience until the image is loaded into the online viewer.

edit 11:11:
A minute ago I tested with a Microsoft IE (works), Chrome (works), Firefox (doesn's work) - sorry I don't know why...

But imagine the possibilities! In theory I could render an animation, in which you could turn around 360° ... also in stereoscopic 3D... Holodeck, we are coming!!!  8) ;D

But this will not happen in my life. Until the PC hardware is good enough for rendering such a project affordable... and until there are cheap viewers on TVs or even the PC I will already be sitting in my armchair and enjoy being fed by a nurse (the fleshy one at the busstop, Hannes  ;D ;D ;D  )

Very nice, Nils. Indeed, Firefox works fine. I wonder how your app works; you say it's one jpg. If I use PTGui to make a web-based html/flash file, the output is 14 small jpg's, which are stitched online. But easy to upload. Can't you use FTP to upload a big file?
The problem is that I can't use the viewer (flash based) offline, due to browser restrictions (?), so for that I use FSPviewer. But that re-renders the image somehow and the sharpness of the original is gone. So I'd really like to find a (free) offline panorama viewer that sees the spherical image straight away... but haven't found one yet.
Renders need to be quite large for a sharp image on a big monitor, mine was 8000x4000. Not so strange if you divide the whole circle in 4 parts of 1920px (my resolution), you're at about 8000 total.
But, why do you have such strange sizes? A panorama image (equirectangular) needs to be 2:1.
Title: Re: little riddle
Post by: DocCharly65 on January 22, 2016, 04:50:04 AM
Ulco, when the final render is ready I'll upload it on my cloud and offer the link here (MS OneDrive)

For years I didn't do anything about panoramas. As I told I was only inspired by your wall  :)
And never before I did a real spheric 360° panorama so this one was my first one ever. So I didn't know about the 2:1 size and had to resize the image. The running renderjob is too close to be finished so I will not stop it now only to resize the format  ;D

I wanted to use a viewer that is available for everybody. The online viewing tool from Panorado is the only free one (for non comercial use) I know so I used this. The offline tool from Panorado is not for free and the export only supports CD but not e.g. exe-files.

You're right - I remember the weird results from photographing panoramas if you don't keep the horizon on zero  ;D

A next step with increased quality (I think the link still should work - I only changed the linked image):

http://pdf.effekta.com.de/DownloadsTemp/Online_Viewer/Pano_SHN_150121_001.htm (http://pdf.effekta.com.de/DownloadsTemp/Online_Viewer/Pano_SHN_150121_001.htm)
This is 5000x6000 resized to 5000x10000.
My big i7 is rendering a 6000x12000 now and will be finished about next weekend...  :P

While waiting I played with my Isetta...

[attach=1]  and the 3D Anaglphic:  [attach=2]

I could cry. after 3 days rendering I found out that there are floating grass instances after repairing the pavement. Not too obvious but I see them... now!...  some more details also don't work as I want but the Isetta looks quite ok for me now.

Bullsh...!!! I wondered what the enabled "use Y" in the slope folder would do...

I cannot explain what exactly is the problem. But if I DON'T enable it then the dirt looks like some interference or moire effects. With "use Y" enabled I get better and more random dirt:

You should try a transform shader with use world space enabled after the PF

Yes - I think you like nice and cool cars so could you please tell them a clean car is OK?!  :)

Chris, you are a hero... you have proven that an Isetta must be clean  ;)

Thanks, otakar... you're right the bricks are not displaced. I personally don't miss it.
The project is at it's limits. I can almost not work on it any more without risking crashes though all populations are set to "hidden" in the preview.
I must keep some computer capacity for the planned animations. Vehicles will pass the road and there are missing another busstop and the "Tardis"  ;) at the end of road next to the company building.
Yes I can be patient but the fight for dirt on the car has brought my patience to end.  :-\

Sorry Jens and Hannes, in this project the workflow is just too slow for the dirt. What worked ok with the "solo" Isetta, was just painful in the big tgc.
What looked good in 1280x720 with 2/2 AA/Detail, looked horrible in 1920x1080 5/4 AA/Detail. I would need to adjust the fractal shaders for the "HQ" Version but even a test rendering of the cropped Isetta in that environment needs up to 1 hour. After now 20 hours testing different settings and seeds for the "dust and dirt shaders" I restarted the panorama render with the clean Isetta  ::) sorry.

I also tried some other options like modifying the single object parts and their textures but there are too many parts (more than 100 - I'd say one of the better models for the payed money :) ). But why spending so much time in something I anyway don't want to do?

Fortunately I kept some of the automatically safed renders to demonstrate my trouble:

This looked acceptable for me:
[attach=1]

And without changing anything else than resolution and render quality I got this:
[attach=2]

I did about 30 of these experiments the faster smaller ones 4-15 minutes each render - the bigger ones 1 hour. sorry - just had to choose other priorities for the moment  ;)

Got it! Here you can find the final panorama of my "Silent Hill Interpretation"... and another little surprise...

Do you find the coin and the second eagle?  ;)

Youll need java activated and the image needs 10 up to 60 sec to load depending on your internet speed.

The site is still very basic. I don't have so much time to care about it but it will grow.  :)
