Post by: jbest on October 28, 2011, 03:37:02 AM
Hello guys!

I'm taking an eight-month trip around the world, so I won't be able to do much TG2 stuff (as if I was, but anyway). I'll still be sticking around as long as I have internet, and I'll hopefully be able to get great ideas from the world I see and stick it into the computer :P

TRIP ENDED
March 13, 2012: Venice, Italy
March 10, 2012: Ljubljana, Slovenia
March 4, 2012: Hungary
February 24, 2012: Croatia
February 19, 2012: Slovakia
February 15, 2012, Brno and Prague, Czech Republic
February 11, 2012: Munich, Germany
December 21, 2011: Belgium
December 20, 2011: London, UK
November 17, 2011: India
November 4, 2011: Australia
October 28, 2011: New Zealand

So, see ya guys!

Wow, that's amazing! I'm sure you will have a fantastic time. I envy you, but hopefully I'll get the chance for something like that one day too. So where are you going, is your itinerary planned out already, or did you just make an 8 month travel window and pick the destinations as you go?

Hello Oshyan,

The main skeleton of the trip is already planned and booked :) After New Zealand I am headed to Australia, then India, then Belgium, then New York. That's already booked, but I'm going to a lot more places than that. (In other words, after Belgium, I'm going to more European countries. Same with New York.)

Also I'm not traveling by myself. I'm traveling with my grandmother. ;)

Is it really dirty everywhere and crowded as crowded can be?  That's what we see in the news and movies and such; just reality checking.

When I was in China last september I think I saw maybe 1 or 2 people with a helmet on their scooters and (even crazier) motorcycles?
Can imagine it's no different in India!

Have fun man!

Totally. Almost no seatbelts (if there are seatbelts they pull them out) and almost no helmets. Wild country. People drive with their horns  ;D

Whew. After a month in India, I am now in Belgium. I will be here in Belgium for six weeks (long time ...). And I  was also in London for one day.

Belgium from India - what a contrast!  I hope you enjoy good food and drink there.  I've heard nothing but good things about Belgium.

Let us know how it goes, please.

6 weeks in Belgium?? lol
I'm very curious what you're going to do in those 6 weeks.
You can travel the entire country by bike in 6 weeks! ;) lol

Going to The Netherlands as well? I live in Rotterdam.
Title: Re: Around the world!

It's certainly possible, I could go to the Netherlands. It's not in the current itinerary, but we shall see. (The current itinerary isn't very much planned anyway.) Belgium is similar to the US, only English is, like, the fourth language here. (I saw that at the Brussels train station.)

We'll see what happens here. People around here speak French and Dutch, mostly.

Later,
Jbest

Hello people. It's been over a month since I have been in Belgium, and I will be here for a week more. Then I will be going to more European countries like Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, and more. After the Europe trip I might be heading to the Middle East. Exciting stuff.

Until then,
Jbest

Are you enjoying Belgium?  How's it going?
Title: Re: Around the world!
Post by: jbest on February 04, 2012, 11:42:55 PM
Well, it's kind of hard to enjoy Belgium with this freezing Europe weather. At least there's snow on the ground and you aren't left with nothing good from the cold.  ;) But it's a nice place. This is probably not the time, however, to start going around Europe, but anyway, what to do.

Snow makes things beautiful there, I'm certain (for the most part, if you stay indoors mostly) and then it reminds of the Bourne trilogy.   ;D

No, one of my friends was supposed to bring me somewhere in the Netherlands in January but didn't. That was a little disappointing, but what can be done. I wanted to go to Amsterdam in October for the Blender conference as well but obviously that isn't going to happen right now.

Good weather! Haha, well if you think snow is good weather (and lots of snow), then I sure have. :)

Yesterday I took a train from Munich to Brno, Czech Republic. I'm not too fond of the Czech language, mostly because of how ridiculously foreign it sounds compared to English (I wasn't too fond of the German language either, in terms of how it sounds - sorry to all Germans  :-[). It's snowing even more here than Germany - in some places, snow goes up to my thighs.

See you later people.

Ghehe, well if you have been to Munich so then you haven't heared German language but Beiern/Bayern dialect which is completely different from the 'real' German language. Germans themselves tend to have difficulties understanding those ones from the south of Germany, so imagine.

However, many areas in Germany have a dialect so there are very few places where the 'real' school-type German language is spoken (according to my German colleague, but maybe Frank can verify this too).

A world trip, what a great adventure. Could use something like that myself one day :)

How did you like Munich? I live (and study) in Munich, so I'm curious :D

@ TU

Well, I guess someone whose mother tongue isn't German won't understand a single uttering in Bavarian dialect. However, Germans usually do understand Bavarian people as long as they don't encounter a "native Bavarian" instead of a "normal" one  ;D. But I guess this is the same for many languages and dialects. And while there is a lot of dialect spoken in Munich, it's not hard at all to find people without any sort of dialect. Munich is full of citizens who moved to the city from completely other parts of the country.

Ah, I see. Well. I couldn't tell the difference when I passed through Frankfurt and stopped in Munich (the announcements) - either my ignorance of the language or they speak the same dialect in those places.

Thanks man. It's a real adventure.

Well, to be honest, I didn't actually get to see too much of Munich.  ??? No one wanted to go anywhere in the snow and cold (including myself). So I would like to go back one day and actually see the city.

Well, I can't blame you. The temperatures are absolutely extreme these days (it's been getting warmer since Wednesday, finally!). Usually we have anything between 0° and -10° Celcius and not -25°.

You should come back in summer anyway, then you get to experience the "real" Munich with all its parks, beer gardens and outdoor activities. :)

I think I need to be updating a little faster. Went to see the beautiful city of Prague on the 18th of February, and on the 19th went to the west of Slovakia. Now I am in the east. In two days, I am going to Croatia.  8)

Prudent and cautious, I sure will be.

Took 15 hours and three trains to get from Slovakia to Zagreb, Croatia via Budapest, Hungary. After spending three hours in a very small Budapest station, just waiting, took a dirty and cramped train to Zagreb that was about seven hours long. Ugh. Croatia is a beautiful country though. I will be here for about a week.

Hey fellas. Back at my home in Hilo, Hawaii after 7 months of travel. 16 countries and 44 cities, towns, and villages. I didn't write up all the places on the front yet, maybe I'll do that later. Just wanted to say, trip's done and dusted for now.
