Title: My finest render, also looking for suggestions !
Post by: Jgone on July 19, 2017, 12:56:02 PM
Hello people !
I started working on this piece today at 9.00 am and clicked the render button at 18.00 pm.
I'm extremely happy with the results, but i'm open for suggestions. What should i tweak in the render ? How to improve it ?

Also i would really like to hear if there are any essential rendering setting tips i could turn on to increase the quality.
I rendered with these settings : https://gyazo.com/ca221d08349cde3630cdb6feef921d19 + all objective populations had the highest settings too, yet the render finished at 39 minutes.
What settings should i kick up to improve the overall quality ? Should i just pump up the resolution ? ???
I'm completely okay with letting my machine run for 24 hours rendering if that improves quality !

Edit: Mods if you think that his post is better suited for terragen discussion or other area, please move it. I don't mind ! :)

The reflections seems off to me.  And maybe a bit too much saturation of colors.  But overall a pretty image.

I agree with the colors. Think ill tone em down a bit in post.
What bugs you about the reflections ?  I've been staring this image for too long now so i might miss something essential.

Really nice. Love the mistiness.

The water seems a little too still, and maybe a bit too clear. The single tree on the bank looks a bit out of place I think, it might look better moved about 3ft inland.

The water sure looks bit too still, i agree. And the tree really does look out of place, but i gotta admit, i placed that tree there just for the sake of composition, not because of realism.
I think the single trees position + reflection really bring something to the picture.

I am super happy how the mist turned out ! Glad you like it too !

I don't have much to nitpick here. This is really well done. At first I thought the water was too flat as well, but then you would not want to destroy the zen-like atmosphere this exudes. Possibly some animal life, like waterfowl?

I think i would be more comfortable adding some animals in post. A good suggestion for sure ! Thank you :)

You might try turning off reflection entirely in the Water shader and adding a Reflection shader after it and use Ray traced soft shadows for softened reflections....I'd be tempted to add a small amount of wave action as well.

Interesting, what are the benefits of doing this ? Improved quality ?

yup. it improves the believe-ability of the water IMHO...Dune turned me on to this I do believe...a source of many great tips in my time here.

I think it's been really worth the hours spent. Very nice render. I like the mist too, and the play of the different hill reflections in the water. If it renders so fast you can easily try some adjustments.
1. Soft reflections may indeed be interesting; use a reflective shader after the water shader (turn off reflections there) and set it to 0.004 to start with. If you go higher, you may need to increase quality. A little patchy wave action could be nice, just some whisps fo wind across the lake, use the patchiness in the water shader for that, you can test distribution of waves if you set the waves extremely rough temporarily.
2. I agree about the big tree, just a tad too obtrusive, IMHO. Either replace it by a thinner (green) tree (birch?), or move it to the right, so it sits in a grassy patch.
3. I would also look at the vegetation among the trees on the right far hillside; they seem a bit lighting up, so maybe too much translucency.
4. Also, increase Enviro light a bit to get a bit more light in the shadow parts (1.25 or so might work enough).

I'll be sure to doodle around the reflections on my upcoming render, thank you for the tips
