Title: 300
Post by: rcallicotte on April 10, 2007, 10:48:44 AM
Interesting insight about the making of 300.  I like the idea that Lightwave is presented as something someone can use to do whatever is needed.  Now...about that TG2 inter-development with Lightwave, uh...   ::)

That's pretty interesting.  I haven't gotten around to seeing that movie yet, but the more I see and hear about it the more I want to see it.

Pretty decent movie, a nice action epic. Not historically accurate, but not *that* far off I suppose. ;) I saw it in IMAX and sometimes the all-CG backgrounds were a bit distracting. TG2 might have had a nice role to play there. ;D As this sort of all-blue-screen movie making approach gains popularity I think we'll see TG2 and similar apps getting more of that kind of use.

That's my hope, Oshyan.  When I saw the backgrounds in the movie, I was thinking TG2.  It's worth seeing at least once, I think.    ;D

maybe tg2 will be used in http://www.sanctuaryforall.com/ (http://www.sanctuaryforall.com/)? a scifi tv show made entirely in front of bluescreen. ;D ;D ;D ;D

long time no see everyone! Ive been busy getting ready for my russia trip (yay) anyway back on topic. I though 300 was a great movie, not historicaly correct but it was basice on a graphic novel. I agree with Oshyan though the backgrounds were a bit distracting.

Will

i watched the movie and i think its excellent!
any one who has been connected to the internet for the last two years should know its not historical. Its something like an epic sin city. Great effects, great battles, amazing style and so so acting, lol(of course sin city's acting is top notch, at least the actors are good)

now regarding the landscapes...the thing is that in my opinion general 3d apps like maya or 3d max are always best. they are more flexible. Terragen should be fine for mid to long distance landscapes, but the others are better for close-ups...at least for now.

While "300" is loosely connected to the history of what happened, the actual history is just as unbelievable.  There was really a very small group of Spartans who inspired the Greek army to defeat Persia by standing against multiple thousands of Persian warriors.  The movie couldn't have been more gut wrenching in effect than the reality, though the movie is obviously comic book.  It's supposed to be about honor, but it seemed to me to be more about kicking arse.

to expand on that, in "480 b.c.: 300 warriors under Leonidas defended the pass of Thermpylae for two days against sevral hundred thousand soldiers from Xerxes I's Persian army. They inflicted a reported 20,000 casualties and gave their countrymen enough time to prepare their navies to fight and win the Battle of Salamis." page 76. Essential Militaria by Nicholas Hobbes
