Title: Allegorithmic is now Adobe
Post by: jaf on January 23, 2019, 11:41:37 AM
Just got an email from Allegorithmic (Substance Designer/Painter) stating they are now an Adobe company!  Bad news in my opinion.

You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. You will no longer have an individual identity. We are the Adobe Collective.

I always wondered how often a BIG PLAYER has tried to assimilate TGs technologie - if at all.
As soon as a small(er) innovative developer gets 'assimilated' so to speak, the lasting impression
in this process for me is that evolution cycles for the former standalone product are slowing down to almost a halt.
Pressed into the development cycle of the buyer there is only little progress mostly.
Not too many examples come to mind where I thought "oh, that is nice - a good future lies ahead!"

If you have half a day free, do some reading from the Allgorithmic forum ( https://forum.allegorithmic.com/index.php/topic,27494.0.html )
My concern is I purchased perpetual licenses for Painter and Designer and Adobe will unlikely keep the server up to support those licenses.

A couple years ago I divorced myself from Adobe because at my age on a fixed income, I didn't want to be locked into apps that would stop working if I couldn't afford the subscription price.  When you pass 70 you start looking at things like health care, etc. a little differently.  Hobby's can become secondary.
