Title: Fill light (alternative)
Post by: bigben on July 26, 2007, 09:23:28 PM
This is actually a bit old, but I forgot to post the files in this section.

This is a basic, generalised fill light setup I created to provide fills for overhangs and under rocks. I'll revise it when soft shadows are available. The original post detailing its development with sample images and performance comparisons is <http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=1475.msg14599#msg14599 (http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=1475.msg14599#msg14599)>

Thanks Ben.  Even with the new system coming out for soft shadows, I expect this sort of thing to flourish.

The new system is for soft shadows, not fill lighting. Just a clarification. :)

This setup is primarily for lighting shaded areas, although it does have some impact in lit areas as well (sometimes adverse). The single zenith light with a shadow will be replaced with a very diffuse light when it's available, simulating the light from the sky. The sun in turn will have a much sharper shadow. Render times will be interesting.

I'm guessing this image from Luc Bianco <http://lucbianco.free.fr/2bgal/img.php?id_img=513 (http://lucbianco.free.fr/2bgal/img.php?id_img=513)> uses the new soft shadow?.
