Terragen really needs an Autosave that the user can modify. :-[
We do have this in the issue tracker as a feature request. What is the specific reason for your particular request?
In the meantime we recommend using the Save Incremental feature with which you can quickly and easily save a new version prior to rendering, or any time you need to (without having to manually specify a file name).

I have a habit of clicking CTRL+S every once in a while. It's second nature by now.

I now do this often and it has saved my bacon a few times.
