I had no idea what do do next, so I remembered my own advice: take a real photograph and try to replicate it as good as possible, which is great for learning how to create realistic images.
I had a nice wallpaper for a two screen setup for some time, and I thought let's give it a go.
The upper one is the photograph and the lower one is my render.
Wow, this is awesome. Great challenge to yourself.
Impressive! You even matched some parts of the cloud shape on the left. Projected mask, random luck, or what?
- Oshyan
I wish I could say, that I did this or that, but it was random luck. I had a good laugh after I hit the seed button a hundred times and I got this. ;D

Lol that's really impressive. I do notice the shadows inside the forest don't seem as dark as they should though, but overall it took me a minute of looking between them. The bloom in the wallpaper and such threw me off.
Perfect.
Absolutely Great Work! Clouds are even better in TG.
For perfection you'd need smooth reflections and a tiny bit of dirtstripe on the beach, and less color variation in the right distance greens.

I made a rockwall that i didn't liked and saw a photo just 1 day later that looked nearly the same.
I nitpick at the world around me too, so yeah always room for more perfection :P
You should have left it up to the viewer to decide which is the photo and which is the render!
Great work :)
Thanks again! Maybe I'll try to change some more things to make it more similar. Sounds tempting...
I clicked to enlarge the image then immediately forgot which was which. Took me and my colleagues here ages to figure out the bottom one was the CG one. I'd imagine you'd fool a lot of people with this one. Really well done!

I know the same feeling. I'll see warping in stone in my scenes and scrap it thinking it just looks too funny, and than see almost identical formations in the geology groups I am in

It would be cool to see how photorealistic you could get it. It's already superb
Wow!!!! Well done for this.
Thanks guys! I'm already changing some things.
Nicely done.
Handled it like a boss.
It's an interesting challenge: replicate a real world photo to the best of your ability.
You nailed it, especially on that sandbar.
Enjoy a whiskey.
Impressive. :)
Very impressive! That should go into Terragen marketing to show what can be done. :D
Thanks again, guys!
Here is an update. I took Ulco's advice and reduced the colour variation of the trees on the right side, added some more structure to the sand and additionally changed the trees on the island a bit and increased the colour variation here.
Awfully cool! I wish I were there too. Great job, Hannes.
Damn, Hannes - I am always amazed by how sharp and lively your images are! Tell me it's postwork! :D
What a nice place to be!
I didn't believe that such a realism is possible with Terragen.
Created after a real picture...how crazy is this!!!

Beautifull picture and excelent work for reproduction! 8)
Thank you all! Btw, this time the only postwork is a bit chromatic aberration (apart from downscaling). I tried to do as much as I can within TG, so there is no need for too much pw.
That meant I heavily played with the atmospheric settings and adjusted contrast and gamma values until it roughly looked like in the reference image.
Very, very good indeed! The latest version is just not quite bright/exposed enough though, I think. Maybe you want a better result than the reference image? :D
- Oshyan
Beautiful!
What Ulco and all the rest said...sitting here mind blown at the photo realness of that render.
Beautiful and very ingenious. As far as I am concerned, working from a photo or sketch is the most difficult thing to do in Terragen.
really impressive !!!
the realism, the composition, the light, the almost identical scenes !
Awesome shot, mate !
Very impressive,,,KUDOs and ditto on all previous compliments; but the thing I wasn't convinced by was the foreground water where it hits the beach on the right. It isn't reflecting the palms so I'd suspect a camera, tweak and maybe more transparent with more obvious waves.
8)beach chairs, umbrellas, and a skanky pier, haha. (no spiders) Perfect 8)

Really loving this. I see with the changes to the vegetation the light/grayish shadows have decreased where it should otherwise by pretty dark due to imposing bright contrasting.
Wow!
Very nicely done!
Brilliant piece of work.
I have thought for quite a while that it would be interesting of PLanetside to post photographs from time to time and ask users to replicate them in Terragen. A lot of Bing Desktop images would be suitable.
Well Done.
Sorry for reupping this thread but I couldn't resist. Just have to say WOOOW!!
It's really hard to tell the difference and even harder to say that the second one is a rendered image. I'm just getting back to TG after leaving out TG3 completely and it's images like this one that keep inspiring me (don't ask for my meager results, though)...
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it.
