I'm trying to simulate lighting effects, such as chemical refraction when light scatters through different gasses, but when you use the dept modulator, it breaks this feature. Is there anyway around this? Is this a bug? For example, dense gasses like butane/propane create a brown shadow, even when the gas is not visible, rather than no shadow, or a grayscale shadow.
Shooting off the hip, perhaps you could just change the color of the fake dark?

That's actually what I'm doing, but when you apply a depth modulation, the fake dark power is cut off to like half the cloud form. I'll make an example.
Hmm, I tried to do a test and wasn't actually able to get the same issue that I had with my galactic core where only the top of the dept modulation was darkend. Not sure what I did differently in the galaxy scene.
