Terragen Discussion / Re: Windows 10 mandatory updates and long rendering

Windows 7 all the way. If I buy a new PC it will be Windows 7. Buy it without software, acquire 7, use it. That is the solution to this Windows 10 nonsense imho.

Good catch! Looks like the subdivision "Force all edges" is the culprit.  Unchecked, it renders fine.

but I may just go offline with anything I want to keep

that you have to say that about your operating system is just nuts

I quite agree. I have my tgd and such files in documents, so all was not lost there. I have a Mac tablet and phone (gifts from my kids) so I have tried pretty much every system. Ages ago I even did some type of game thing for my kids, typing code into a cassette. I have no idea what I was doing, somebody showed me what to do and I did it. haha   I did some work on a Mac, just document stuff. So it isn't like I won't adapt.

It's "Andrzej". ;) Though most foreigners address me as "André" which is fairly decent too. :D

Even despite a few empty spots, I still think that the foliage looks alright. After all, sometimes you get bare ground between the grass IRL.

What is this red circle on the side of the building doing? Just a placeholder?

where TG interprets colour contrast as displacement, but the multiplier must usually be upped.

I think I see what you mean (but correct me if I'm wrong  :))

It sounds like you're looking at a map that may be normalised - that is, all the values are between 0 and 1 and it's only the contrast between those values that give you a sense of the displacement from the original terrain. You then need to add a multiplier to "expand" those values so the displaced terrain matches the original.  This is very arbitrary though, and prone to errors.

This is why OpenExr is the way to go when using images for displacement and height-fields - the pixel value corresponds directly to height of displacement - a pixel value of 150.675 will displace to 150.675 metres in Terragen. Though  a common mistake is to not match the area covered by the displacement image - that is. if your displacement map is generated from a terrain 1000 metres square, then it must be mapped to the same size area in Terragen (or whatever software) for the ratio of height to width to be correct.

Another reason why OpenExr is a good idea to use is that, in the main, it is saved as linear data - most software (can't speak for Softimage, though I would hope it would) would read and write an OpenExr and not apply any gamma correction to it - if it did, your height data will change - it must be interpreted linearly.

Denis,
This is a SERIOUS upgrade
I lost all Microsoft Visual C+ beginning 2005 through 2015, the MSXML Parsers (5 versions) Microsoft Professional Office, Office 365 6 versions of SketchUP,  5 versions of Terragen, any software installed with a Disk or not native to MS operating system, including my virus software
In document form, it is a list 3 pages long.
I have used Windows since 1995, thinking like you did, stay loyal...and I probably still will, but I may just go offline with anything I want to keep.
I did just remember I do have either Win7 or 8 on the backup drive, but even if I do that I don't think I have all necessary files to run programs foreign to MS.

Edit afterthought: What is infuriating to me is that I had been running Win10 on said computer for at least a year, and encouraging others about it, then January 9, 2018 like a thief in the night this reset happens. :(

It would be nice though to have such a feature; scaling according to grey value. :D
