Title: Suggestions for camera path tools.
Post by: bigben on February 21, 2015, 12:08:16 AM
Hi All

As I'm getting into the visualisation area a bit more at work  I'm getting to play more seriously with Terragen (and be payed at the same time :)).  I've played a bit with Blender for setting up camera paths, but we also have access to 3DS Max and Maya (one of the advantages of working at a uni ;))  As I don't have much modelling experience I know there's going to be a learning curve, but before I start I figured it would be nice to get some input on what tools and processes others were using and maybe some suggested workflows for me to research

Hi Ben. If you want to use maya. There is a smart phone app that allows you to control the camera the way you would control a game (mostly just your thumbs).

May be a smoother way for you to fly your cam.

My typical work flow is to make a model in Trimble sketchup. (easy to learn), then export collada file from Sketchup and import it into Blender. Then export .obj from Blender and use that in Tg.

If you pay for full version Sketchup, then you are allowed to export .obj files directly.

Question: Can one export cameras from Blender to use in TG?

R.

You can export from Blender the camera animation in .fbx format, and import it in Tg but only if you have the pro + animation version...

I'm mainly looking at dealing with terrains rather than models..  I got the Grand Canyon in at relatively low res into Blender but it was a bit cludgy with so many polygons, and having to resize things to be able to see them seemed a bit awkward as well (although I can live with the occasional bit of math)

I'm not looking at doing any post-rendering work, just something like export fbx terrain from TG > animate camera > import camera path into TG
