Title: Not Terragen Rock
Post by: J_Con on November 17, 2017, 11:00:26 PM
Hi All.
Just wanted to show this image. I've been trying out Substance Painter and Mari lately. These two rocks where generated in max then exported to SP as FBX. I had been painting photographic images onto the models with varying degrees of success.

The Material on the rocks was downloaded from Allegorithmic's website, there is a link button in SP that brings you to a materials resource on their site. The Material is procedural and was built in Substance Designer. I couldn't really alter the material in SP, other than change moss amount.

The software seems to do a nice job. I haven't looked at Substance Designer but I think Terragen users would feel at home in it.

Nice rocks. But have you ever tried making (such) rocks within TG? I think a lot of patterns can be produced procedurally, perhaps even wear on 'extremities' by using the displacement fractals as mask for colors.

Hi Dune. Thanks for your comment.

I purchased one of the beach scenes from NWDA authored by yourself a few months ago that had Terragen rocks in it (see attachment). Those Rocks are pretty damn good, and editable.
However, like most people here, the amount of time I have to spend investigating any subject is very limited and Teragen often requires a lot of investigation!

I was building the Rocks above mainly to be scatter rocks and scene debri and was surprised at the nice job SP could do. With a few tweaks they could get quite close to the camera. SP does procedural edge wear, dust and dirt, as long as the UV's are done correctly. It also supports Tri-Planer mapping which is very forgiving.(I had to google that :)  )

I had a look today at Substance Designer. Node Networks with procedural materials and Masks. It felt very Terragen.

One thing I always think about with these programs is, as nice as the procedurals they produce are in the final process they are image maps in Terragen, and unless they have very high resolution and accompanying file size ar nowhere near as useful as procedural....and this from a converted mainly maps user due to my colourblind range...

This is very interesting!  I did see a post somewhere on this awesome forum from either Matt or Oshyan about the possibility/plans of eventually supporting Substances.

The way substances work in 3D applications & 3D Game Engines that support the .sbsar file type (3DS Max, Modo, Unity, Unreal etc...) is they are built/baked at render time at the specified resolution, so really the user could specify whatever resolution they need for the rendered image to look good.  This would be awesome from a materials/surfaces standpoint, because you wouldn't have to bake out your substances into bitmaps if Terragen supported the .sbsar file type in some way.

I am not a programmer, but I would imagine that like some of the other File Loader nodes in Terragen, there could be a Substance Loader node, which could be used like a bitmap, but have a panel of variables that could be changed through the use of sliders like many TG nodes.  These variables would slightly alter the material similarly to how you can in Substance Painter.

If something like this were to happen, you would be in "Node Heaven" using TG and Substance Designer in combination.  Dreams would be born, and other dreams would come true. ;)

Oh, and I finally can spell Oshyan without looking at a reference.  :)

Those are some good looking rocks.

If that happened I'd buy Substance in a New York second.
