I had a go at a trunk in ST, added some finer detail in ZB, now posting at PS ;) It might be too 'old' to still have bark on it, but it's just an experiment.

Wow...pretty darn convincing!
Looks wonderful!
Pretty amazing huge tree, must have been a monster when perpendicular with leaves. Your post might also be called INitial CReation heh heh , based on the software and destination. Well done btw.
8) Very nice. :)
Nice work Ulco!
Very nice!
Thanks. Here's another view, and I changed some shaders, mixing different textures.
Way better...more real for sure.
Nice work!
Often see this while fishing. That is one big tree if those are turkey vultures (buzzards?)
Again, GREAT!
:) Cool birdies.

hee hee hee, I bit my digital tongue on that....
Yes, the tree turned out a bit big, forgot te reduce size. Vultures are griffon (unfinished). Here's another old trunk.
An ominous scene with some very nice subtleties; the distant erosion work, and the dark grasses are all masterful! The fallen trees are gnarled and twisted to a fine level: excellent!
What zaxxon said.....
Another nice trunk. I see improvement on the roots part. 8)
Well the first one was pure ST 'one piece' work, here I added some loose roots, which otherwise wasn't possible.
Really like the last one! Great wet and stormy feel.
Are you powerfractal texturing these? Very nice blends however done. :)
No, texture is UV-based, but with additional light/dark by fractal. Speedtree has a very nice way of making trees in 'cages', where branches aren't loose entities, but really pulled from the trunk, and textures have quite a smooth transition. But you can only pull so many roots out of the trunk (though that might be stretched some way, don't know), hence my additional loose roots in the latter.
