Some new work I can share (to keep you guys busy); a series of landscapes from the same POV, but different era's. Low-res WIP's. No lake object used, it's all one layer. Don't hesitate to comment.
Very interesting work. Like the second image a lot. I suppose to the purples and such are flower blooms? Love the water depth transitions with the flow of the landscape.
Fantastic work - the second image is great!
Very nice!
Nice work Ulco.

Surely you jest, I counted at least 3 surface layers....but brilliant work. Dunno how you wrap your brain around a network like that but you have my unbridled admiration.
Bobby is so right! In the tangle of nodes I would be totally lost!
But nice results :)
Second one is fantastic. Because I'm too lazy to work my way through your node network image, how are the branching water patterns done? Hand-drawn mask or erosion plugin?

Wow!!!! That second image is really fantastic! But that node stuff is intimidating...

Glad I'm not the only one who gets the blues from the Blues....maybe someday I'll have an epiphany re: blue nodes but it ain't happened yet.
At first I thought it would be easy to make an image like this, but the more I wanted to detail, the more nodes were necessary, and they all interfere with eachother. So, I got lost sometimes, and wanted no distraction to figure out how to get something done without losing something else. It could well be done simpler, but, hey, it grew this way... :P
Btw. Bobby, with layers I mean 'physical' layers, like a lake and a planet. This is all one planet, but yes, with quite some surfaces. The blue nodes are just add and subtract or multiply blues to combine masks, nothing difficult.
The main shapes are drawn maps. I've been thinking to do this by subtle erosion, but then I'd need to paint a heightfield first (0-6m max). I might still try that, just to learn.
Yes, purples and lighter grey-greens are certain (flowering) plant species.
Update, and a screendump of how I adjust my streams/creeks. I simplified my network a bit and used one water/creeklayer instead of two, with the water pure white and the mud soft off-white. Final adjustments can thus be made in TG.
very cool, I think I finally grokked this.
Very nice, Ulco. But I anyway like both versions and just interprete them as high tide (Fase-3-(10).jpg) and low tide (Fase-3-(12).jpg)
In fact it wouldn't be too hard to animate tide, even if it's all one layer.
Put this on the tv for maximum magnification. Pretty pretty pretty! I have to figure out if I can download an image and make some screensavers or a slide show....heh heh
No. 4 in this series; marshlands, and bogs growing, around 1000-1500 BC, same area and POV. WIP.
Impressive how you manage to make a flat landscape still interesting.
I was lucky that the creek is there (officially present in that era), otherwise it would have been a lot duller. I needed to use the same POV.
Echo what René says!
A little suggestion/question/wish:
Could it be that all tree-covered areas could look a bit more natural if there was some undergrowth and groundcover? I think where trees are, there must be some lost rotten branches, bushes and so on.
You're right, Nils. I have been planning some extras in this one, but good that you reminded me not to forget it ;)
Your new website is quite nice! Animations load great on my mini tablet, so that is awesome. 360 views all function too! Good job!
I was also wondering about the density of the vegetation, looked a little sparse for your norm. I am sure you will soon have it up to snuff. ;D
Thanks Luvs. I don't like working from templates and all, but as Flash is not working properly any longer, I had to. These templates are all a bit similar and I don't like being dependent and not being able to adjust all myself, but it's functional, also on phones. I do like that.
So the footage of the river breaking through WAS found (https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,25476.0.html (https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,25476.0.html)) gave me some ideas about wave patterns. Sculpted a set in mudbox, made a 2028px VDISP map out of it, and inserted in the setup I had made earlier (can't find that thread right now). Needs refinement though, but it works quite nicely. And it's not quite correct yet.
good stuff, quite convincing...

Whoa, that's actually a really god start! Is this what you meant by mixing deafult and water?
I've really been wanting to do as estuary/wetlands/tundra like scene but man I find it hard making rivers that I like. Mind letting me in on any tips?
No, this just plain water shader and foam.
I made the rivers by making a sloping area (distance shader unclamped), added some displacement and let Daniil's plugin loose on that with some river settings I don't know by heart. The flow map I illuminated in a surface shader, and ortho rendered (without any lights) the area for a map to export and import as 8-bit greyscale tif.

Was the exporting/importing so you could scale the river map as needed and apply to other terrain? Sorry to go off-topic. Just really interested in getting some usable results. I won't be able to ortho any maps (free ver) so why I'm curious.
Yes, and I don't think it can be done directly, because I had to slope the slope quite considerable to get nice flows. You can point a camera down, same as ortho.

That makes sense. I wonder if the new map exporting will help me since i don't have ortho.
Orthographic cameras work in the Free edition too.
Both look really convincing.
The V4_test-1.jpg is a bit better because in the distance you don't need to see every detail of the foam texture so urgently.
I am really curious to the finals :)
Yes, and the first one is really what I need, so I don't bother (atm). This was a bit of premature testing work on an upcoming commission, so I hope this is what they actually want. Otherwise I'll just push it through their throats 8)

Oh they are? Nice! Swear I was told it was part of paid when I asked about getting maps from TG for basic grayscale disp colours.
