Title: pylons wip animation (9s)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on May 05, 2012, 10:50:46 AM
i just started working on this last night. this is a big project for me ;)

this is just the first part of several scenes i will animate, each one is intended to match specific parts of a music track i have chosen as a soundtrack.

the animation for this storyboard is about 33secs

C&C welcome.

two renders from this weekend

both use FrankB's fake stone bed.

currently rendering a animation sequence.

Comments and Critiques welcome.

there will be a total of 9 storyboards, along with 9 larger renders for better views.

I like especially tere-1  Lane! It reminds me on 2001: A Space Odyssey  :)

the plan so far:
sun & moons goes down, darkness, transition to next storyboard, thick clouds fade away revealing the next landscape.

Its really nice. Deserves a larger render. Shame about the banding. Im sure its just compression though?
Title: Re: Terebellum Animation (41sec)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on May 24, 2012, 08:22:06 AM
i would like to do a larger version but it would take longer than it did before, this one was about 5-6 days non stop rendering.

if i do a larger version (say like 1280x720) i would like to do it with ranch computing.

there is some banding but looks a little less noticable in the stills

Very good, moody, it builds an expectancy, out of the dark, almost stillness I have a feeling of foreboding, of terrible violence to come ... very effective indeed
Looking forward to the rest

exactly. the music is, in my opinion fitted to match the landscapes, i have always pictured something like these barren landscapes listening to it.

before i even started working on it, i listened to the song over and over again, studying it.

to save time on building scenes i'm using some old renders for animations

a still from from the second part, please excuse the atmosphere banding.

there has been some issues with RTA on the eclipsing sun, it works properly when the sun is in the center of the moon, but the closer it gets to the edge it starts to become visible, shining through the object.
i have tried RTA enabled on both the first and second planets atmosphere node, i get the same thing with each.

Do you have an example of this? Try adjusting the "floor" parameter on the moon's atmosphere node. It creates an opaque sphere that light can't pass through. The value is an altitude in metres, and defaults to -16000. It should be a negative number so that it doesn't interfere with negative displacements on the moon, but if your moon is very small you'll want to use a smaller negative number than the default.

How exactly did you light the terrain, zaai-three-nine?!

I have had good results getting rid of artifacts like banding by using topaz for photoshop. But batch processing a movie will add a lot of steps to your workflow, and you may not like the look you get. Photomatix Pro also can help you. Of course, rendering without issues is always preferable.

for that last animation link: the animation didn't turn out completely the way i wanted it to be,  towards the ending, the sun goes below the horizon, yet the terrain is is still visible, it should be completely dark by the end, i only had one GI cache file for that animation, so i made a GI cache file sequence.

badger thinks it deserves a higher resolution, and i agree with him on that
that would mean a longer render time doing the sequence from my computer.

Any luck with the 'floor' parameter on the moon's atmosphere? Maybe try -100 (minus 100).

Title: Re: Terebellum Animation (41sec)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on June 01, 2012, 10:59:46 PM
no change, both the Floor on both atmosphere nodes were at their default -16000
changing the values to -100 yielded the same results too,

here you can see that it gets better the farther it gets from the edge.

This is a personal project, no profit in it, i am mainly doing it for myself, and for others to see, much like most of the renders i post here. i am conveying emotions and feelings in with the combination of terragen animations+ music.

i had actually envisioned  something like this at least a year ago but never brought it into reality until now, mainly cause now we have more animation features and a decent render farm available.

next step with this is to add some rotation keyframes to the rocks on the rings.

Hi,

Looks great man! I Love this stuff

One crit I would make, is that the blue glow of the planet is too strong. It looks like its rising much to much above the planet. Even if it is an accurate account of some exo planet, aesthetically its too much.

Thats a nice looking planet, Zaai!
But I still think the atmo glow is to high above the planet, and the atmo color is wrong for this planet, should be more like the planet color in my opinion (for what its worth).

i've found a strange bug that is visible on the terrain, it seems to make some parts of the terrain and stones darker than the rest... doesnt exactly seem like a shadow, seems more visible in larger renders... i can get a example of when i get home.

yes, the clouds are animated, they have a transform shader attached, with movement and some slight rotation, i would tell you what other params. i have animated but i'm not at home.

Post by: rcallicotte on October 09, 2012, 12:37:44 PM
Thanks zaai for showing more of what you're doing.

I have a question - these last three videos play jittery.  Is this because of many little increments in your animation or did you use large leaps between frames?
Title: Cloud Sea (animation links)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 09, 2012, 01:24:33 PM
there are leaps in the frames. these last three or so animations are merely tests.

i intentionally skipped frames for faster animation render time, i like to do my renders over night or during the day when i go to work, so when i get back/get up it will hopefully be done. These clips are just give you an idea of what is happening in the scene and for me if every thing looks right.

I like it too. This scene makes my mind try to  think up a story for it. You have succeeded in convincing my imagination to drift off bit. Thats a compliment, by the way.
I see an array of deep-space dark matter synthetic-aparture reluctance foci used for transpositional navigation, whatever that is! ;D

Very cool!

The speed of the mist reminds me of an arctic blizzard. You have given me ideas.

i made the pylons with 3DS max, fairly simple models, something i could whip up in a short amount of time and import into TG2 without any UV mapping, just a few materials assigned and add the shaders in TG2.

might make some similar models, to give the scene a little more variety.

This animation is pretty darn good Zlain! Its simple and sweet. That music really sets it off for me.
I don't know if the dust is too fast or too slow, or just right. It seamed fine to me.

I would like to see this one rendered larger and at better quality. It really is a nice little shot.

Veeery good man! I like it and wish it would last a bit longer, but hey...luckily we all understand that rendering without a farm is a matter of patience :)
I like the dust flows a lot, although to my taste they may have been a tad bit slower.
The texturing and surfacing is just good and the pylons add something mysterious and interesting to it.
Keeping an eye on this :)

Cheers,
