Title: Iceland terrain data
Post by: bigben on November 03, 2014, 04:46:48 PM
Figured I should have made a separate post for this rather than adding to the end of one.

Here's some data of Iceland for anyone who wants it.
Geotiff: http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/eu/iceland.tif (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/eu/iceland.tif) (275mb)
Just a composite  of the files from here: http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html#nat (http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html#nat)

I have a version with bathymetry if anyone wants it, but I figured it probably wouldn't suit this too much. I can do a UTM projection as a TER. It you want this just ask and I'll put it up.

There is a bit of stepping in the data, but at this low res you'd need to be adding in extra detail anyway for close up views.

Thanks for your efforts Ben :)

There is 10m DEM data....well no...10m data exists of Iceland I should say, but it seems it's not available for free. I found some interesting DEM sections for $800-2000 each  :o

Wow, that's expensive even compared to Australia's prices for DEMs. I noticed on Mapmart you can pay $15 for freely available data at lower resolution.

Maybe this map has enough size to it to be useful to some, in ways other than what it was made for. Anyway, I saw a tut on using data where a similar map was used for a cool effect. So...

Maybe I didn't understand your post correctly, but this is a map of swiss and not iceland ;)

I'll say "Yes please sir" to the .ter offer....

I might like the Bathymetry data - I'm trying to do a "from Orbit" view of Iceland. Trying to duplicate that wonderful nasa picture from low earth orbit, but with some interesting terrain underneath.

I was able to make some use of the .tif but I did find a bug in WorldMachine, will post about that separatly. I had to convert from .tif to .BMP until the sea level actually became elevation 0. Made for some funny eroding.

What I really need now is a snow cover map ... I don't need to erode the glaciers :) Poking around for that.
