Title: Silent Lake
Post by: sjefen on September 06, 2007, 07:29:00 AM
My newest image.

This has been a pain in the ass to render. 3 times I had to start all over again. The first 2 times was my fault. There was some trees in the lake and so on. And of course I didn't se it before the end of the rendering. The last time I guess Terragen gave up on it. It just quit in the final stage of the rendering.
But finally it finished.

I used the beautiful terrain MtRainer from sonshine777 which I downloaded from http://www.terranuts.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=504 (http://www.terranuts.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=504). I have no idea of how this place really looks like and this was no attempt to recreate it. I just made my own version.
I also downloaded the airplanes from http://free-templates-download.com/free_3d_models/3d_aircraft/?p=2 (http://free-templates-download.com/free_3d_models/3d_aircraft/?p=2)

Hope you like it :)

Marvelous population and lighting.
Again the sky could use some makeover ... the plains for example are far too contrasting against the colour shades of the clouds.

Excellent render, especially the tree population and the lighting. Agree with Volker about the cloud criticism, I think also a bit more details on the terrain will increase the realism. Really admiring the lighting on this.  ;D

Thanks guys.
I agree about the Terrain. I want to add some more detail to it. I also agree with the plains, but I am actually satisfied with my clouds.
Don't think I will do much more to this right now. The rendertime was more like a half eternity.

This is fantastic and the planes are perfect.

Amazingly beautiful. I won't say anything on the clouds as that has been done enough, but I would like to point out that I admire the lighting on the terrain and vegetation. In combination with the water, this looks utterly realistic!

Frank

I would have left it without the planes. But nevertheless it looks quite realistic, you've done a fantastic job!

Thank you guys.
dhavalmistry - Of course you can ask. They are all xfrog trees. Nice to know you got inspired :)

That's an excellent render. The atmosphere is perfect.

My only suggestion would be to have the planes at a close angle, maybe even the plane flying underneath the camera. That would be fantastic, because it would add a whole story to the piece.

It's still a technically excellent render.

When I opened the full-sized version I literally said "Holy *%$!@". ;) Upon closer inspection yes there are some minor issues, but the overall impression is fantastic. Lovely surfacing, lighting, and yes I like the clouds a lot. Your trees also turned out looking great. Wonderful work.

Might I ask what the resolution of the terrain you used was? It would be interesting if higher resolution data were available...

Thank you adit and Oshyan

Oshyan - The resolution is 4097x4097, but the terrain includes Mt Rainer, Mt St. Hellens and Mt Adams ( if that means something ).

Yeah, that means the resolution is actually fairly low in terms of pixels-per-meter. I'm quite sure a higher resolution terrain could be used, especially since the background mountains aren't visible - the actual area of terrain in view is comparatively small. Might be worth looking into. I'd be glad to make a higher resolution terrain if you'd like to experiment.
