Title: The bridge
Post by: Kadri on March 28, 2016, 05:00:03 AM

A closeup test of the VR scene.
I will try to make 4-5 images. This is a part of one of them.
The water will be a little higher in the final.

Nice towering rock, but you have to work fast, Kadri!

Thanks guys.
Yeah Ulco not much left... I hope i can finish some images tomorrow and then render them.
I would work normally at least 1 week more on all of them  :(

Good news Kadri. The date of delivery has been changed you will probably time to polish up your image to your liking. Beautiful color and texture currently on the rocks.

Thanks.

That is great news Jo. I just woke up early before work, to work more on the images. Can sleep a little more too now.
Aaah....downside is, less sleep for 2 weeks more. You can not please everybody  :P  ;D

This 5000x2500 test render took 120 hours.
I let it render because it wasn't any problem. I made more then 40 models as it rendered.

I will lower the luminosity of the lights and change the clouds.
The final will be much different most probably. I was curious how the look-shadow of the planet would be.
The big building looks much better with lights shining on it.
Water will be much less. And some alien vegetation hopefully if i can texture them decently.

That is quite an interesting image, Kadri. It gives a feeling of 'past-times in the future', like you're seeing remnants of a once alien presence. I am quite curious how you made the vague models, I suspect they are glass plus some fractal dots for the white densities in the glass? Hence perhaps the long rendertime, as that is awfully long!
And it would need 'force all edges', as there are some parts missing in the rock.
But I really like the overall mood and expanse!

This is probably the picture with the most original concept proposed by far in this competition. I especially like the planet in the sky and the sun that reveals the outline. I find it very good to put all that technology starry white.

Post by: Kadri on April 03, 2016, 11:09:15 AM

Thanks guys.

The bridge name comes from the big part of the object that is in the middle.
The old test image below shows the concept more clearly.
The object is more detailed and the planets etc. are a little different now (and still changing).

The feeling it gives is right when you haven't seen the model in full light Ulco.
So not sure if i will use the POV of the spherical image. But just as another image it could stay of course.
I kitbashed the model from some small parts and it is full 3D with some small texture displacements added.
The model is in two parts and is 1-2 GB in size.
When you put a reflection shader on the object and then water with reflection on the planet
you get these awful long render times unfortunately. With glass it would take 1-2 months probably ;)
The lights on the model is a texture map with luminosity.

I shouldn't do this late in the challenge but whatever.
These are some of the quick and dirty made and textured alien plants and plant-animals objects.
There are 24 more similar objects that i am texturing now.
First time that i made so many objects at all.

The image file below is big (6360 x 1944)...

Wow, these 'creatures' are great. They look like plants that will not hesitate to do something nasty. What software did you make them in?
Title: Re: The bridge
Post by: Kadri on April 04, 2016, 12:19:38 PM

Thanks guys.
Some look different depending from which angle you look. Plant or animal...
For an alien world it might be good i think.

I use Lightwave Ulco.
They are still kitbashed, deformed models.
Some surface layers still have original names like Bristelcone or similar but they look so different i don't remember what the basis was for them,
as i made the base models 5 years or so ago.

Very beautiful objects. I am curious to see how you go populated your image with those.

This is definitely the most unique and inspired concept in the mix here. The imagery is surreal and deep in scope, I really like it!

Thank you guys.

Just finished the objects. Could change 2-3 ones but have to move on.
Image is 7820 x 4377 this time and JPG quality 50.

This kind of thing is exactly why I like Terragen so much. The sense of scale is awesome, looking forward to your submissions!
Title: Re: The bridge
Post by: Kadri on April 18, 2016, 11:30:07 PM

I could not make the image with the plants. Bad planning, scene construction on my side. Maybe later.

This is one of the scenes that i reworked just a little. Resolution is 12 000 x 6 000 so i hope you excuse the watermark.
Took 25 hours to render. Just out of curiosity i am rendering the same scene with soft shadows now.
The texture looks only better from a certain distance.

JPG quality is 64.

I will use this and 1-2 other POV's from this scene in my animation. Was the first reason to do this anyway.

Huge man! I have to see this in the viewer. Looks awesome. And the watermark, well, I very well understand, and I kind of like it. May do that as well, the sorry, good idea.

:)

I don't like the look of the texture quite. I am testing a chrome like texture but not sure if i will use it.
As you know the render times are horrible especially with Ray traced reflection softness.
With a big object like this it could take very very long.

Post by: Kadri on April 20, 2016, 07:48:43 AM

Thanks all.

The same scene with soft shadow and another POV is still rendering.
Looks like the render time is at least two times slower.

I might try the same POV with another reflective surface too. Just curious how it will look and how long it will take to render  ;D
Title: Re: The bridge
Post by: Kadri on April 20, 2016, 05:43:20 PM

Another POV with soft shadows.
I will use these as background images with some flying ships etc. for the animation.
And there will be lens flares too for the sun...These images look more lifelike with such small additions (that i mostly don't like much).

The first big image that rendered around one day is at the 43 hours mark with soft shadow enabled this time and still rendering.
It does have 10 hours or so more to go maybe.

These images don't have any postwork by the way.

Wow, soft shadows make a lot of difference in realism.
Good job.
Title: Re: The bridge
Post by: Kadri on April 21, 2016, 04:29:21 PM

Thanks .
Render times are bad of course. For smaller images it might not so problematic.

The image that i am rendering with soft shadows the second time, takes longer then i expected. 66 hours and still rendering.
I used soft shadow values that are much higher(3 times higher) then the default ones.
So i should not be so much surprised in that aspect probably.

A different texture look is out of my reach with these render times. But i might try it in standard images later.

You could try to make this texture more gray (less contrast), and use the current high contrast version as bumpmap...

Yeah many possibilities. Will see what i can do.
The real problem is that i want it more reflective unfortunately.
Not much but a little more metallic.

Just don't use raytraced reflections, I think you'll be fine.

I personally love these ones as well. The sheer scale and imagination on display is near-breathtaking. Makes me wish for a movie/animation. :)
